Using Sierra 300 gr jacketed and 4198 what's the lightest load you would use without any filler?
What are your thoughts on cast bullets with the same powder? I also use 4198 for the
.223 rem.
My son is OK with the bt99 at the trap house so it's
time to play with the big toys.
Thanks.

Just my opinion, but I don't think IMR4198 is the best candidate for reduced loads. I would try IMR SR4759, or maybe AA 5744. They will fill the case much better, even with lighter loads.

Roger that.
Thanks

Just a BIG thanks you for jogging my memory that other powders exist.
Started loading for the #1 and a Blackhawk 45acp/45lc with Lee handloaders half a lifetime ago. There's always something to learn and never forget safety. First thing I learned was the proper use of case lube. A hangfire on a .458.
Thanks again and rock on.

I've used SR4759 in mine. I shot trail boss in a 45/70 and it worked great, so it it is likely good in 458.

I shoot the 458 in a ruger #1, and after a lot of shoulder stomping rounds I loaded some with trail boss. That stuff is amazing! If you just want to take it to the range and shoot some targets you need to try the trail boss like others have said.

My dad uses SR4759 for reduced loads in his 458. I'll check with him and post his favorite combination. Seems to me it was pretty much on par with 45-70 loads for 300 - 400 grain bullets.

458 win mag with factory ammo = PAIN!!!

458 win mag with light hand loads = FUN!!

Later,
Stephen
