I just shot some loads made with new 45 Cowboy Special Brass and 5 grains of Trail boss with a 180 gr lead truncated cone style bullet. All loads were weighed and a medium crimp applied. In six shots over the chronograph I had a high of 813 fps and a low of 762 fps. That is a spread of 51 fps in 6 rounds. Is Trail Boss known to have high deviations like this? These were shot in my 45 ACP cylinder from my 45 flat top. I have seen some loads showing 5 grs max with 180 lead yet the same source ( http://www.reloadammo.com/45loads.htm ) showed 5.5 gr with a 200 gr lead bullet in the 45 ACP case. Does Trail Boss need close to 100% loading density to be consistent? My 45 ACP loads with 6 grs of Green Dot and a 200 gr lead TC bullet averaged 999 FPS out of the Ruger with a spread of 5 FPS. I was hoping to get 950 +/- out of the 180 grainers with some consistency.
