i have been looking for a 45acp Vaquero birdshead at all my local haunts. well i happened upon this today... it isnt a birdshead... and it isnt a 45acp, but it seems like it is somewhat uncommon gun... i am debating getting it instead of holding out for an ACP, but i just dont know...

since i sold my 1911 i have no 45 anymore and have several hundred rounds, several thousand pieces of brass, and several hundred bullets...

but i sure love me a 44 special!

am i right in saying this is a sherrif's model? or is my eyes playin tricks on me and this is just a 4 5/8" model?

Yes, that is a Sheriff's New Vaquero! I have one is SS. It was a Lipsey special run with blued or SS. Nice little guns. Mine really needs a taller front sight. Other than that it shoots well. Don't remember mine costing that much though ....
 
i am so torn on what i want to do right now...

part of me is saying just get the 45LC and have a cylinder made for the ACP later...

that may be my best bet if i can not come up with one of the ACP's...
i really want one with a birdshead grip!

That I can't help you with :P ! There is a saying though "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" ... Might apply here :) .
 
I agree with rclark. Given the sporadic availability of any gun right now and the uncertainty of ruger's production schedules, I would pick up that .44 special, sheriff's model before my shirt tail hit my bee-hind. That configuration is an ideal toting, hiking, and general outdoors gun. Of course the decision is totally up to you. Nice dilemma to have though.
 
Wonder if i could find someone willing to swap grip frames and grips with me....

Haha. Oh i will!

Went by and findled that 44 special. If it had been a birdshead id have bought it. Felt nice but i really wanna try out that different grip frame.

They also had for $499:
a 41 mag (i think) flattop with 6.5" barrel.
A 44 spl flattop with 4 5/8" barrel.
And i wanna say a 45LC flat top with 4 5/8 or 5.5" barrel.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I just went and looked for my invoice. Bud's ran a special on those back in Jan 12. I had no real use for one but who can resist a brand new Ruger .44 Special for $419? I've only fired mine once but it feels good in the hand.

I briefly had a new Vaquero Birdshead model in 45 ACP...(don't ask....)

I am starting to handload for 44, so price of ammo doesn't hurt too bad...

The birdshead is great, 45 ACP is reasonable in price, and I loved mine.
BUT....that 44 sheriff model is HARD to find right now.......you might want to pick that one up!

My 44 shoots high from 25 yards out.....but is right on from fighting distance!
 
I load for 45acp and 44 special. I have the bisley flattop in 44 spl. My issue is i have 4 or 500 rounds of loaded 45 acp and no gun in that caliber right now. Would be a fun lil plinker.

I dunno. I may go back for it. Havta see. Maybe if that acp sells on gunbroker for more than i can pay i will get it.

The one Birdshead in 45 ACP in blued, that i see on GB....will cost at least 640 (including shipping and FFL fees).
For a while, there were always a handful on GB, but they are really drying up lately.

You could always get the Sheriff's model and switch it out for a birdshead grip frame later on......
I do regret selling my Birdshead......but the 44 Spec Sheriff was on my want list for awhile too.....those are also very difficult to find anymore....

Doesn't help the OP much as the price differential isn't enough to matter since his is local/bird in hand, but for others - Bear Arms in Scottsdale AZ has the same blued Sheriff for $580. So they're around, but as suggested are becoming less so.
I've got the SS--with transplanted Montado hammer--and can vouche - great guns. Perfect trailin' gun on the hip. I agree with another poster - get it and worry the birdshead grip later!
 
Well im out on the one on gunbroker. That bidder really wants it more than me!

Maybe one will turn up. Maybe Seebs has one stashed back he forgot about. Sigh. Lol

Joe, have you ever shot a Ruger Birdshead? I had one in 45 Colt a few years back and it was a bit funky feeling to me.

Of course you can always pick up a XR3-RED alloy for a few dollars and be able to swap it out. Would make it lighter as well :D
 
I was in the same boat as you, Joe. I really wanted a birdshead grip but I also wanted 44SPL. I ended up with the Sheriff .44SPL Vaquero blued 3-3/4" barrel. I really am enjoying it. I keep my eye out for a New Vaquero birdshead gripframe but I'm not holding my breath. A generous forum member offered to swap gripframes with me but his Blackhawk birdshead frame was too big for my gun and I didn't have the cash to get it fitted. I do have to say though that the plow handle grip is mighty comfortable. If I were you I'd grab it.

on the 45acp will that hammer swap out to the style that is on this 44? i think i like that hammer better on a vaquero...
 
Its the lower profile but is stainless.

I prefer the lower hammer on blackhawks but the higher hammers on vaqueros.

My 32 single six has the tall hammer. May have to try and swap em

Only alloy (aluminum) if it is the Blackhawk or adj sight Single Six XR3-Red. Vaquero (as in original/large frame) and the Single Six Vaquerito .32 XR3-Red is all steel. When you see "alloy" used in ads in conjunction with blued fixed sight Vaqueros and New Vaqueros, they're referring to "alloy steel"--unrelated to lightweight aluminum.
