Is it possible to rechamber a 44 mag cyl to 44-40 or do I need to start with a 41 or 30 cyl? I would like to have a Super convertible. Can a new model cyl be fitted to an old model 44? Any information would be appreciated.

I had a NM 30 Carbine cylinder rechambered in 44-40 for my 44 Flattop and it worked great. Used the NM cylinder as it didn't have rebated chambers and had the space for the rims, whereas an OM cylinder didn't. Need to put .429" or .430" throats instead of the 44-40 .427", so the loads match the .429" barrel. Really fun shooting a full load of black powder with it.

Some say it doesn't work because the 44-40 case mouth is smaller in diameter. However I rechambered a 44 Mag cyl to 44-40 because it was so easy, I did it myself. Barely any metal is removed and the throats are already the correct size. And as Hashknife pointed out above, you'll need to use .429" or .430" (I like .430") bullets anyway if you want decent accuracy with the .429" bore. So the difference in case mouth diameter is diminished and the thinner walled, bottle neck shaped 44-40 cartridge seals well in the chamber.
