357 max question

Capture44maxi.JPG

Faster and flatter. Cartridge designed for silhouette competition using 180 gr TMJ bullets.
Short version
Yep, this. The 44 mag would take the targets down, the ram weighs over 50 pounds, but the 357 SM/Max shoots a higher BC 180-200 gn bullet faster and flatter. Never seen someone use a 45 Colt in silhouette. It may have happened but I never seen it.

I'm not sure we could actually compare them in a manner to say one is better than the other. All 3 calibers asked about,, are all different, and do things differently. But they all 3 also have their place & do a good job when applied properly. The .357 Maxi was built around the idea of handgun silhouette competition as well as hunting purposes. It is capable of providing energy to know down steel rams,, while having less felt recoil. And having taken game (deer) with a Maxi,, I can say it is an excellent caliber for that purpose.
We often say trying to do a comparison is like; "apples to oranges." Well, instead,, I'd compare it more to the variety of apples. Various apple types are suited for many things,, and yet,, certain varieties are better for cooking, while others are best for just eating. All are good, but each flavor is different.
Same with the calibers mentioned.

I guess I would ask the intended use. Long range silhouette shooting I would say the .357 max shoots flatter and fast enough to carry the energy to put rams down.
Looking to buy a new hunting revolver? The .44 mag takes it on ammunition availability alone. Rolling your own rounds, I would think a hot .45 pulls the advantage.
