.32 chamber throats?

I read in another recent thread here about preferred throat diameters for Ruger .45s. What's best for the .32 H&R? Other than bullets, is there a tool for measuring chamber throats? I looked in my recent Midway catalogs but didn't see one.

Thanks,

The tool of choice is called a Pin Gauge. They are usually sold in increments of 0.001".

Most shooters like 0.314" throats. At least that's what I've encountered.

Thanks Eric. I've heard lots of good things about his work on the forum and I'm thinking about sending him a couple of cylinders, but wanted to be sure first that they need reaming.

I bought a set off eBay that covers .250 to .500. That will cover anything I shoot in a revolver except .22LR.

I'm not sure how precise the markings are on the gauge set I got, but I do know that if the same gauge fits differently in the six throats on any given cylinder, I've got a problem. Also makes it easier to detect an oval throat, which are more common than many think.

One popular theory holds that your cast bullet should be sized to be the same or slightly larger than the cylinders throat if you wish to obtain best accuracy and least problems from leading.

.314 or .3145 bullets are tough to find as most options are .313 or less which would suggest you should have throats of .312 to .3125 or so and there is no easy access to this dimension. (or at least I haven't found it yet.)
