308 Winchester

I like Varget in the 308. I use the 150gr Nosler BT in my Rem 700 and this is what my card says I have laoded:

150 gr Nosler BT
R-P Brass
Winchester LR primers
46.3 Varget

Shoots under 1-inch at 100yards. Mine is set to standard COL because I have a lot of 308s so I don't custom load to my gun. I am sure if I played with the COL I could get it to shoot better.

Only 308 guns that I've spent a lot of time with was an M1A and a rebarelled M1 Garand. They both realy liked IMR 4895. On the other hand, most of the guys that still use the 30-cals for matches swear by Varget.
FWIW..... Nosler makes a dern-fine bullet but if your gun has a 1-10 twist, me thinks that you'll get better accuracy with their 165 version.

Hope this helps.

DGW sounds like an ol highpower shooter. I echo his comments regarding IMR 4895 and Varget. One of the mainstays has been 41.5 grs IMR 4895 on a 168.

When I was shooting one I used VV-N550 powder with either the 150 or 165. It shot faster than any powder I tried and delivered them in pretty small groups too.

Back in my rifle days I used a lot of 4064 in my target 308's, metered like horse turds but it shot terrrfic! My son overhauled a 700 VLS (I think thats what it was) & it was a 1/2" gun at 200 yds on most days with 168 Sierra's & with 125 Nosler BT's it should have been outlawed for rock chucks...it was wicked!
