I read about a guard load in ww2 for the m1 garand it was loaded with 150 gr full metal jackets and bulls eye powder I was wondering if any body on here knew the load.

You could use 9 grains of Bullseye/Red Dot/Titegroup for a very light subsonic load, make sure you check the bore for a stuck bullet every shot though. DO NOT use any filler in the case. The bullets will tumble through the air and aren't very accurate past 25 yards. It won't cycle the action and you may have soot issues because its not enough pressure to seal the whole case against the chamber, it should seal the neck enough though.

What was used in most WW2 '06 service ammo was 4895 as far as I know....My dad used to buy surplus kegs of it (and 4831) after the war....(Bruce Hodgdon got his start selling it too BTW)

Hi,
A "guard load" such as mentioned is new to me. But I have loaded a lot of "pop gun" loads for the '06 using cast bullets over Unique, and a few w/ Green Dot.
They usually run around 1200-1400 fps, and are reasonably accurate for 50-100 yd plinking and getting "trigger time" on paper. I shoot 'em in a bolt action: dunno if they'd cycle the Garand...
For the curious, the Lyman Cast Bullet book has a bunch, as does the out of print RCBS cast bullet manual if you can find it. If you can't, PM me and I'll see if I still have scans I can e-mail.
