.204 Ruger

Hello All, I have not been on for a while do to employment obligations, but I retired in July 2017 and finding time to trout fish and hunt. Good to be back.
I have a suggestion re: another forum. How about a group for the .204 Ruger and reloading? I have been considering a .204 for quite some time. Recently I bought a .204 from my brother who won it at a local fundraiser/raffle. (i.e. bargin)
I have been working up loads for the .204, and have come up with my pet load, and have been shooting .250" at 50 yds.
Having so much fun shooting this round that I thought there may be other members interested in a .204 Ruger group.

I have a .204 Ruger in a Ruger mod. 77 rifle with a Leupold sscope on it. It is very accurate but I am sure that if I had the time to fuss around with some other loads I could get even better. Bought it used from a guy as it has a crack in the stock. Since it has little recoil I don't think it will be a problem. Mostly a drying check I think. It is a hummer and can do almost up to 4000' per second. Have not tried to push it Don't really know why I needed it as I have a Sako .222 Rem. and a Rem. .221 Fireball already. But I do love Rugers!

I enjoy my 204 it iS a great firearm and accurate not to mention easy to reload for. My only problem is as I get older and health declines I may sell mine sooner than later, oh well life goes on.

Well, there is the Reloading section and the Rifles section that you could post in. If it gets popular enough you can ask the mods to make the thread a sticky so that it only deals with the .204 Ruger cartridge/rifles/reloading. That way the .204 fans wouldn't have to hunt for post about it.

I had a Savage 12FV in .204 Ruger, topped it with a 6-24x 50mm scope. Sighted it in at 12x and could cloverleaf rounds at 200 yds. Great shooting rifle but I really didn't shoot it enough to justify keeping it so it got sold to a guy that wanted it to hunt coyotes (very small hole in the pelt). Though about building an AR in that round but other interests took precedence.

What little I've seen of the cartridge seems to bear out its inherent accuracy potential. There was a fellow in the lane next to me at the range not long after the cartridge was introduced. He and a buddy spent a fair amount of time in MT each year, trying to see who could get the longest (laser) confirmed prairie dog kill. He was ahead the previous year at something like 538 yds with a "hot .22" of some flavor, and wanted a little more challenge.

He'd bought two rifles, both in .204 Ruger. One was a Savage 12 LRPV (Single shot, right handed bolt action with left side loading port) and a very beautiful custom Cooper. They wore matching Leupold glass, variables that topped out somewhere in the 14-20x range. His job for the month before the next trip was to find a handload for the Cooper which would match the Savage's out of box performance with factory ammo. He was getting close: both rifles had turned in a 5/16" group that day. Difference was the Cooper did that at 100 yds, the Savage at 200! Pretty impressive either way in my book...

The load that my .204 seems to like is a 35gr Berger on top of IMR4895.
Now I need to start monkeying with the OAL so I can consistently hit gnats at 200yds.
As an added note, I stopped through my buddies reloading shop today and picked up a 100ct. box of Berger bullets. We have a fresh snowfall of about 3 inches of snow. When I arrived at home, I bent over to grab a bag of groceries out of the car and that box of Bergers fell out of my pocket and hit the inside of the car door.
The box came open spilling the whole box out in the snow. After a couple of choice words I grabbed a snow shovel and scooped the snow up and put into a bucket to thaw.
After running the snow and bullets through my wife's collinder, my 100ct box is down to 99.

I have a Ruger ultralite 204. Put it in walnut, then into a chassis...





Also have a Ruger VT target grey. Couldn't stand the obnoxious, clunky beavertailed plywood, so slapped it into a walnut sporter. Mo' betta.....
