Doing my best not to buy anymore guns just because I can... got an email yesterday from The Palmetto State Armory that they had 10/22s on sale for $189. not sure if this was a one day sale or not... I'd be sorely tempted to run by there and pick one up just for the heck of it except that it takes close to an hour to check out.

An hour to buy a gun?

Here in Texas it takes longer to drive to the store than to buy a gun.

same at my FFL up the street... PSA has a different system and it is not as easy... I ordered an AR lower a number of months back... go in to pick it up. showed a young guy at a counter my recent and he punches something in a computer goes to the back and a few minutes later get the lower and takes it out of the box and shows it to me... then he does some more paper work and punches some more stuff in a computer then he takes me over to a different counter and hands me off to two other guys who then show me a computer screen where I have to fill out the 4473 form on the screen which then requires one of the guys to keep coming over hand helping me, seems like there was another hoop or two I jumped through then they give me one of those disc that light up when you are at a restaurant and your table is ready and I get to walk around the store and look for stuff to buy... keep in mind there is no call in to the Feds because I have a CWP here in S.C. I do need to run by sometime and pick up an upper for that lower and that should I presume take less time.

I bought my 1100 in Ardmore, OK and it took about four minutes.
My son used to live in Dallas and told me how much easier and better ir is to buy a gun in Texas...That is true freedom. Here in CA, one has to go through hoops to buy a 50 round box of 22's...The reason for this post is you said you bought your 1100 in OK ? So it is ok for a guy to live in Texas and cross into OK to buy a gun wirh no problem ?? Just wondering. Here if I go to Nevada, they look at my CA license and they don't want to sell me a gun...I guess it's different there ?? If so, it is great..

Bordering states you can purchase firearms. As a PA resident I have purchased from WV gun shops......I have purchased in MD but I will only buy a "non restricted" long gun in MD unless I find a handgun I really want. I bought my S&W Model 19 from a shop in MD because it was in great condition and a great price.....that shop was closer to me than my PA shops......which I can just walk in and walk out with a purchase in minutes. But I had to go through the MD hoops and have it sent to my LGS. Almost 2 weeks to get something that should have taken minutes.

Blume's comment about the time it takes to check-out at PSA,, is not totally uncommon. Larger retailers are going to more electronic types of transfer stuff, and adding more layers of protections for THEIR BUSINESS,,! I see a few booths at SHOT advertising such programs & platforms.
Bigger stores,, with many employees,, where the employees may not be as diligent or knowledgeable about the laws & such,, requires several levels of "paperwork" double checks by the upper level types. That way,, it they get audited,, stuff is easily shown to the ATF,, and the business gets fewer bad audit reports.
Smaller gun shops,, where just one or two people do the actual 4473 forms and checking of the buyer's info & proper form info,, is usually a lot quicker.

Unless your state of residence has laws against it, or the state you are buying it in has laws against it, it is legal to buy a long arm in any state as long as you are a legal resident of the US and are of legal age and are not prohibited by law to own one. Non resident aliens in the US on a F1 visa (enrolled in a college or university) are legally allowed to buy any firearm that any other US citizen can purchase, including NFA firearms (Suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and yes, even full auto firearms) as long as it is legal in the state where they are going to school. There are other visas that allow non-US residents to buy fireams as long as they meet certain exceptions.

Handguns typically can only be sold over the counter to residents of that state, but you have to check the laws of the state where you are buying to make sure. Typically an out of state buyer will have to have a handgun shipped to a FFL in their state of residence and do the transfer at the FFL location.

There are ALWAYS exceptions so buyers need to check the state laws (your residence state and the state where purchasing) before attempting to buy.

DO NOT expect the FFL in your state to be completely conversant about firearm laws in all the other states!! Do your homework beforehand.

All you guys in different states are so lucky...Here we are in the United States of America, but if you live in CA, it is definitely like living in another country. And this country of "CA" really sucks.

Dan,
Yes it was changed a number of years ago. Residents of any state can legally purchase long guns (rifles and shotguns) in other states, provided the sale complies with federal law and the laws of both the buyer’s home state and the seller's state. The transfer must be conducted through a licensed dealer (FFL), typically (but not necessarily) involving a background check.

Here's a few Rules for Out-of-State Purchases I down loaded

  • Handguns: Federal law generally prohibits FFLs from selling handguns to non-residents, requiring them to be purchased in the buyer's state of residence.

  • Rifles & Shotguns (Long Guns): An FFL can sell rifles and shotguns to a non-resident, provided the sale is legal in both states and it may or may not require the firearm to be shipped to an FFL in the buyer's state of residence for final transfer and background check, depends on the state law.

  • FFL Required: All purchases across state lines must go through an FFL; private sales between individuals across state lines are generally prohibited, but again check the laws of the state where buying.

  • State Laws Vary: Each state has specific laws, and you must meet all requirements (age, background checks, waiting periods) of the state where you buy and the state where you live.

Aaah yes. Welcome to Commiefornia!
I'm a lifetime resident myself, hooked on the weather, I guess.... I live close to the beach..what is this snow shovel you speak of?

Well, I've been here just over 40 years now.....I can drive to Yosemite and see snow in a little less than 2 hours. Also, I can be on the Santa Cruz beach and boardwalk in also less than 2 hours. And in the valley I can get plenty of sun and no snow at all....Yes, this could be a kind of paradise, weather wise, BUT our main problem is we have way too many fruits and nuts that have made our state government here what it is....an absolute frickin mess...sorry to get off track.

The tarnish is the CA driver license. CA has so many restrictions, that "common folk" aren't aware of, no one wants to take a chance of being extradited to CA for a violation. Federal law says that any citizen of one state can go to another state and buy a long arm. No so with handguns, however.

Clear this up for me.... are we talking about buying a long gun from an FFl in another state and walking out of the store with it or are we talking about then having it shipped to your FFL and transferred to you? As far as I know I can do the latter with either long or short guns....

FF Law says You buy Handgun in your State residence. Buy Long gun where you want

Blume - We are talking about a physical, in person, out of state purchase of a long arm. See my responses - To clarify for you - By federal law, for a long gun, if a person is not prohibited to buy it (by state or federal law), they can physically go into a gun shop and buy a long gun in any state, pay for it and walk out the door with it. UNLESS the state law where you are buying it (or the state laws where you live) have restrictions on doing that.

IL has 3 day waiting period on picking up new gun purchases. So, I can still cross the bridge into MO and buy a long gun but must return in 3 days to pick it up.

Hand guns gotta be shipped or delivered to IL FFL unless I can use my C&R.

bit of a sidetrack here, but I was just visiting a guy outside Ft. Worth last summer and after I turned off the main road into his driveway it took us 45 minutes to get to his house.... I think he also has his own zip code

If it's that much hassle at PSA why not have it sent to a good ol mom & pop shop.... even a shipping small shipping charge is better than going to the DMV.. ;)
PSA "daily deals", is my fave place to browse... I bought 2 lowers super cheap a while back and shipping to AK was $20.00

Not a bad Idea reuben .... but I'm hopefully done with spending money on guns for a while.... I just broke down and bought an upper for the AR-15 lower I mentioned took me forever to get out of PSA with a number of months back... side drift... here is the crazy thing about this upper... I've wanted a Sig Rifle for a while now but could not justify the cost.... I got an email from Sig with a 'special' on Yeti coffee thingies and decided to break down and pay too much for one... $34... then I realized I was going to have to pay shipping to get it unless I spent over $100 and so I looked for something else in their on line store.... could not find a thing 'I needed'... finally clicked on the sales section.... there was an AR upper on sale for $999.... I can't make this up.... I spent $1,033 to save shipping on an over priced coffee mug....

I really need to take a new picture of this rifle with the Yeti Coffee container..
But the rifle is good looking by my standards:

Oh, and I realized last week I only had about 3 or 4 AR magazines and so I ordered some from Mag Pul and I really like the 20 rounders better than the 30's.

We drive everywhere. I am going to Tour 18 to play golf on 3-13 and the drive south on 35 takes the same amount of time to get to within 10 miles of my buddy's house and the other 25 minutes to go the last 10 miles.
