10 mm ammo question

Hey folks, I have a chance to trade one of my guns I never shoot for a Glock 4th Gen G40.
It's a long slide 6" barreled gun. I've been kicking the thought of a 10 mm around for a while now.
Here's my question, I'm thinking of it as a backpacking gun when up in the mountains or for hog hunting.
Can anyone recommend a good bullet ,I'm thinking about the Federal Preinum Vital- Shok 180 gr JSP bullet.
Does anyone have any experience with this load?
I figure it would handle hogs , a bear if need be and any two legged preadators I might run into.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I run two 10MM pistols, an older Colt Delta Elite when they first came out in the '80's and a new Sig P220 SAO. From my experience your Federal load or the Hornady HST load would be ideal for your use. However for my new Sig, I've been reloading the Speer 180 gr Gold Dot bullet in once fired cases with a healthy charge of powder. Don't think Speer sells a 10MM factory load, but in my opinion, the Gold Dot bullet is one of the best on the market...if you can find them.

For bear or hogs, you need penetration. Any of the cartridges intended for self defense, such as the Gold Dot, XTP, or other hollow points, work well on thin-skinned, lightly-boned targets but probably not so well on thick skin/bone animals like bear or hog. I would look at a good hardcast lead bullet, such as Double Tap or Underwood:

I like 10Gr of Blue Dot under a Nosler 180Gr HP.
Cranks out right at 600 F.P. with a 5" barrel.

Not a "ground pounder" but still quite effective.
IIRC 10.5Gr is rated as max load.

Glock doesn't recommend shooting any lead bullets in their guns.
That's why I was thinking that the Federal JSP might be the best of the factory loads I see out there.

you probably know this but there are after mkt. quality barrels that fit in your glock that will let you shoot cast or whatever you want; I have many lone wolf barrels

You can switch barrels on a Glock, but it can't come close to equaling a Sig P220 in quality and accuracy..

The Glock will work fine for my needs.
I don't care for SIG's, just don't feel right in my hand. Besides my friend wants a gun of mine I never shoot and is willing to trade me even for a brand new Glock G40 Gen 4 6" bbl gun.
I've shot it and it's more accurate than I can hold it too offhand ,it doesn't need to be more accurate than that.

I'm still breaking in my Kimber Eclipse 10mm. Just shooting 180gr FMJ for the time being. I have some Double Tap 180's and 200's to try also. I don't hand load for this round as yet. Good luck with that Glock 40! :D

I badmouth Glock now that's out of the way. I shoot 3 different 10mm. The STI 6" uses 180gr, no hogs but deer size on down Underwood works great. Case separates with 200 gr rounds. S&W 1006 handles 200 gr all day. EAA also works with any weight. Had a Glock but couldn't hit the side of a barn shooting from the inside, this with any Glock, can't shoot then good. If you load your own, load to the upper end or stay with a .40 S&W. “Look at any of the jacketed solids for hogs” is what I have been told. You might look at the 10mm Forum as they have a good breakdown of factory loads and hand loading.

My G40 with 180 gr. Hornady XTP's over 10 gr. of 800-X in NEW Starline cases primed with S&B caps clocked 1328 FPS avg for 10 rounds. Be advised that this load exhibits a slight bulge/belly/smiley or whatever you call it.

Hi Lou; I can't offer too much advice but I did scratch a long time itch and bought a NIB stainless Delta Elite recently. I've wanted one of my own since using a friend's to carve jack o'lanterns on a long ago Maine deer hunt. Got bored looking for deer so we shot pumpkins! Anyway I've been reading a lot about the 10mm and there's huge velocity differences in off the shelf ammo. I have been shooting Sig 180 grain FMJ that are suppose to hit 1150 fps or so and I doubt that I'll be able to top their quality with hand loads but I'm going to try once I can get some time to get to the bench. Good luck with your Glock they're a quality product for sure. Mike
