Large Gatherings More Dangerous Than They Are Worth?

The latest food festival shooting are no longer anything new. Here in NJ, everyone always looked forward to going down the shore in the summer. Now the boardwalks- a major draw- have become out of control danger zones thanks Pop-up take-overs by people who seem to be impaired. Malls have become almost daily challenges, with un-provoked attacks using all kinds of weapons or fists. Bars...well bars are bars. However, they are now actually better controlled than most places.

It's not just NJ. It seems to be anywhere that crowds might gather. Any festival, or parade, or concert, etc... Street take-overs with stolen cars, terrorists driving into crowds, whatever.

If just 1 person in a hundred has some sort of mental or emotional problem, that's over 3.5 million with such difficulties roaming the country, and not enough manpower to stop or control them.
I am comfortable going anywhere by myself, but putting my loved ones, including little ones- in that position is not something I want to do.

I have no answers- just venting. Thanks for reading.
 
Large crowds make me nervous. Too many whack-a-doodles out there, and not all of them are "technically" mentally ill (being a democrat is still not recognized as a mental defect).

As for the food festival shooting. I do like that some of the news outlets have stopped calling it a mass shooting and are instead calling it what it is. A gang shooting where innocent passers-by were hit in the crossfire.
 
Geeeeeeee how does a gathering of this size that I spent a week at get by with no problems ;) ;) ;) Well it could be that airplane nuts have a special air about them.

When I go to the mall with my wife I think about this. Malls, movie theaters, things like that are easy for the bad guys. Lots of exits, not much visible security. Sort of. At the mall I do see more and more armed police and security officers when I go. (Not very often.)

I don’t have any answers either.

And it’s not just this country. In Berlin, Germany that guy drove a truck through the crowd last week.

That's a LOT of folks! ....The number of volunteers alone is almost double the population of the little town I live in. I went to the Houston Air Show back about 1999-2000 but I don't remember it being nearly that crowded.

I know folks that love large crowds and get off on them... think about these giant stadium with 100,000 people in them... there is some kind of mass high I think people get when they are in these large groups... it is not for me at all. Even if the stats show they are safer than being at home sitting in my tub I still would choose not to participate....
 
I never have liked large crowds. It is just my nature to prefer few people, or being solitary. I will attend airshows on a military base, but that’s about it. I haven’t been to a stadium since the late 2000’s, so about 20 years. I also pretty much go armed everywhere, and where I can’t go armed, I don’t go.
 
There have been a lot of field days, food festivals and heritage festivals ruined by gangs of teens with trouble as their goal.
At one field day they had security with metal detectors at the gate. The troublemakers went through the gate and then someone passed them weapons over the back fence of the event.
I avoid large groups of people that I don't know just for that reason. All it takes is one unhinged moron to cause a mass casualty event.
 
There is almost nothing that would make me want to deal with large crowds. I do that a couple of times a year for work attending trade shows and that is plenty for me. Occasionally my wife wants to attend an event like a pro ball game or a concert, so I'll bite the bullet and take her, but nothing for me at all, thanks.

I'm not usually a fan of large gatherings, but Burlington, Iowa, has some exceptional music attractions that usually have quite nice crowds. Steamboat Days are a great example. 😁😁😁

Yeah, I'm originally from Iowa, not too far from Burlington. ;)
 
I’ve always avoided large gatherings when possible. I detest large cities. I don’t have a phobia and when it’s an event I’m interested in it’s just what is necessary. Visiting Disney World when the kids were small or attending a state fair or an air show were enjoyable but I’m clearly more comfortable with intimate gatherings.
Some are uncomfortable when alone but I’ve spent untold hours hunting and fishing by myself and weeks at a time single-handing my sailboat on offshore passages.
One is never truly alone, here is a photo I took in the Sargasso Sea of my temporary companions the Atlantic white sided dolphins. There are four in this photo.

The last large gathering I attended was Altamont, mega concert. Never felt good there or anything much larger than an average restaurant.
 
I hate to say it, but I no longer live in Anchorage, I moved to the valley. The town I live in is about 7,000 people. The next town isn’t 20,000. I like it. Sometimes I go to Anchorage for a Dr appointment or meet a friend for lunch, maybe go to Costco. But the homeless, druggies, gangs have got to be too much of a problem. A Walmart is closing because of theft, a gas station in the older area closed and they tore it down, a grocery store closed, a big Sporting Goods store, most folks would recognize the name lost $50,000 worth of ammo and various camping gear, just daring the help to stop them, but management has said let them go. I was in a Fred Meyer and there was an armed guard. I shook his hand and before noon he had already thrown 3 folks out for drunkenness. Unless I’m going on base, or the VA, I carry for every trip. Many of the trouble makers are minorities who were problems in their village, and were given a one way ticket to Anchorage. Their own village wouldn’t put up with them. It breaks my heart.
 
It's really not about the size of the gatherings. It's about the mentality of those present.

Has there ever been a "mass shooting" at an NRA convention or other heavily pro-gun event? I don't think so. Why? Because the creeps that want a moment of fame for hurting innocent people are sissies. They are attracted to "gun free zones" and passive crowds who aren't aware of their surroundings.

I typically avoid large crowds. Not because I feel like an easy or inviting target. I just don't like having to yell at the person sitting next to me to have a conversation. I like small gatherings of like-minded people.
 
I stick to the woods, rivers, lakes and mountains with my horse and (maybe) my dog.
Two or three times a month I go to town for necessities, maybe a restaurant if it's not busy.
Lucky for me, nothing that draws a crowd is interesting.
 
No longer a fan of any of it. Don't even like flying commercial. Not from the fear of flying, but the livestock feeling I get from going through all the motions.

No more big concerts or Nascar type venues. Feel more better in a semi rough bar. The odds seem better for not a catastrophe.
