Built for the long snow tunnels in the Sierra Nevada passes. Normal smoke in those snow sheds could and did injure engineers and firemen.
They have one at the California Railway Museum in Sacramento. The thing is enormous.

I used to spend my winters working at a ski resort on Donner summit. I was always amazed how those trains were able to make the grade.
