During the East Coast Gathering, Contender off handedly told me Smith and Wesson is discontinuing the Model 41. Why? I have no idea. I've wanted a Performance Center for a while. I've had a Model 41 for almost 20 years. I bought it used and it came with an Ultra Dot. Someone attached a scope base on it. The older models were not drilled and tapped.
Anyway, I bought it used from a gun range. They actually let me shoot it to test fire before buying. It worked. I bought it and then it quit working. I struggled for about 3 years trying to get that to function. It would shoot a round and then jam. Some magazines worked, some didn't. It was a nightmare. I took it to a gun smith. Then it shot for a while and then became even worse.
Finally I sent it to Smith and Wesson. They replaced the slide for $300. They even charged me for springs that were "worn out." What a joke. Ruger wouldn't do that would they?
So, my old A series Model 41 now runs absolutely flawlessly. But it's got that stupid rail on the top. I've always hated that gun. Mostly for the years of mental abuse it put me through.
I even bought some Herritt Target Grips. Super nice. I feel like an Olympian.
Anyway, long story short, I now have the Performance Center Model 41. How incredible. The trigger is perhaps slightly better than the older A series gun. I took it out yesterday and put 200 rounds through it. Not a jam, not a hiccup, just bang, bang, bang over and over.
Interesting, the Herritt Target Grips will not fit. If one panel lines up, then the other will not. Both fit separately, but not together. Time to break out the dremel. I think the new Performance Center is slightly thinner.
Here they are side by side. I might actually sell the old gun. I'm not sure yet. It's going to rest for a while.
You can see the barrel of the Performance Center is not as chunky.
