With the recent warm weather, I've had some coon traps set around buildings and catching a few. Since there's really no value in the hides, Son has been skinning the skulls and running them through his 'bug box' where the ??? beetles clean the tissue off the bone. The cleaned and dried skulls have more value than the hides.
With this in mind, the animals must be dispatched by shooting through the body rather than the low powered (Remington C-BEE or CCI QUIET) 22 bullet to the brain. For no specific reason, I've been using the suppressed Charger loaded with Winchester 'Super Suppressed' 45 grain HP for this purpose.
I've been impressed by the performance of this ammo. It produces quick kills and seems to transfer or dump more energy on the target. The wide, open bullet point is effective at close range and I can only assume at more distance also. I also have a couple of coyote traps set and plan to at least give this ammo a try with body shots on trapped coyotes--I normally use 17HMR which often doesn't exit to save the hide but those also aren't worth the gas to haul to the fur buyer.
