Is Colion Noir right about open carry?

I agree for the most part. It's just easier in most situations to not disconcert the people around you. I'm glad most states have the open carry option in case someone does notice that you're carrying. For years in Florida concealed meant concealed. If anyone noticed you could be charged and loose your permit and your guns.

I agree about the need for allowance of open carry. I recall a video circulated before COVID of a middle aged man on the side of the road changing a tire who was literally tackled by an officer because he "flashed" the butt of his CC pistol while bending over. It was absolutely ridiculous but apparently in that state he had "committed a crime".

Thats an @$$hole cop just looking for a reason. I open carry when on horseback, whether on trails or in the woods. I dont give a rats butt whether or not people like it. My feeling is that IF I need it, I will need it quickly. I do however cc when out and about in stores, restaurants, etc.

I think open carry can have a real deterrent effect upon criminals, but only if there are numerous people open carrying in the same location. A criminal thinking of attempting a robbery might just decide to find somewhere else to do it if he sees multiple people open carrying, knowing any one of them could take him out. On the other hand, a single person open carrying would be the primary target, in my opinion, of someone ready to commit a serious crime. So even where legal, I would not open carry until and unless I see multiple people routinely carrying that way so that if I do the same it will not stand out. I prefer concealed carry and being the "gray man".

Like a lot of things in life, I think the wisdom of open carry depends entirely on the individual and the environment. In some small towns in America, folks might think you're a visitor, if you don't open carry. In other places, even where open carry is theoretically legal, walking down a sidewalk with a firearm might get you stopped & questioned by LEOs multiple times before you get home (if you're lucky enough to avoid arrest on some unrelated 'paper' violation, just because they want you "off the street").

As always, IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc., etc.

I agree with Vito, but if you are in a situation where a bad guy is in the same place as you, and you are carrying concealed - Vito carrying open, the bad guy is going to shoot Vito, this gives you time to draw and shoot the bad guy or duck and hide then shoot back

I like open carry, in a proper holster, when in the "wild", to have protection from wild animals (no matter how many legs they may have). Being allowed open carry makes it easier should you have to stop at a gas station or store for a quick resupply, without having to worry about people thinking you just came in to rob them.

When out and about in public, I rely on situational awareness, good sense (notice I didn't say "common sense", which isn't all that common) and concealed carry to keep me safe.

I open carry in the woods (family-owned) when I'm up at my mother-in-law's place in the country in GA. We have small dogs and there are gators, coyotes, bobcats and Eastern Diamondbacks around so I usually carry one of my Blackhawks or Vaqueros in .45LC loaded with alternating snake shot and hog killers in the cylinder. When I go into town I just put a jacket on over it. Conversely, in suburban FL I always keep something concealed about my person. Even if DeSantis achieves open carry I prefer to be the "gray man" and will keep it concealed.

Not sure why but I find the narrator of that videos voice annoying. I also find myself questioning some of his statements. He contradicts a statement made by Colion Noir that when you open carry everyone knows you are carrying by saying that people don't notice you open carrying so they don't know. How would he know if they notice or not. Does he think they are going to say something to him about his gun or Scream "Gun!" & run. Not very logical.

Just my opinion but like most others here I open carry if in the woods or away from town. I prefer concealed carry in town I don't care to attract attention to myself.

Whether anyone freaks out or not largely depends on the City/State. I was in town today (Columbus, MS) wearing my P365 OWB with a jacket that barely covered the muzzle, and made 3 stops. Lowes, my regular LGS, and for gas and a bottle of ice tea. Pretty sure it showed a few times, but nobody mentioned it. So I don't know if anyone noticed, or just didn't care. The same thing in many of the anti-gun jurisdictions around the country would probably have earned me some attention from the local police. Btw, I've never had a carry permit in any State I've lived in or passed thru, and never will.

I open carry out in the woods or outback. Usually, a large bore revolver. Otherwise, it is CC for me.

I see people all the time open carry in cheap, Uncle Mikes type holsters, flopping around and barely secure. Most do not have any type of retention device and many, many times I could have walked right up behind them and snatch their gun. They almost always are oblivious to their surroundings. I think it is more of an ego thing.

I agree 100% with Colion. The only real advantage to open carry is a quicker draw time (especially in the winter with hoodies and coats on). You do loose the surprise element though with open carry.

Colion is right. You are much better off to conceal your weapon.
If you must open carry then you must have a good retention holster, that's what the cops have. I've seen many videos of people trying to take the gun from a cop.
