I have an ad in the classifieds about me looking to buy some specific types of GP100s.

Well, I got a PM from a member here (forum name is in green lettering). The person said he might have something I would be interested in. Asked him to send me pictures by email (probably shouldn't have done that but that's water under the bridge now). I started feeling a bit funny about these dealings after reading the emails. Yes, he had reasonable answers to what I saw in the pictures (The GP, 5 Safariland Comp III speedloaders, Hogue finger groove grips along with the standard grips w/ inserts.) I asked for and he sent me the serial number (a 2009 model). Just didn't feel right somehow. His email was a hotmail account, name was H Sharief. So I checked his personal info on the forum. The person joined in Jan 2013, has 2 posts, one in Oct 2013 and one Nov 2014. Last visited March 2, 2019 at 8:43 PM. That is it, nothing else about him.

Thoughts - possible scammer?

If I didn't feel right about it, I would not have dealings with him. I personally wont buy anything from anybody that hasn't been on here awhile, especially a gun.

My thoughts? Maybe, maybe not. I've noticed several with long memberships but very few posts. If your concern is that he doesn't have the items described, have him take a photo of them with something distinctive like a sheet of paper with todays date on it. If the photo was pulled of the net he shouldn't be able to do that.

I have bought from posters in the Classifieds but ONLY from known individuals. Of course he may be like me on some other sites. I visit but don't post. Personally, I would keep looking.

Trust your gut and let him know you’re just not comfortable either the sale. There are plenty other GPS out there so it’s jot like you are looking for a holy grail gun.

Yes, I agree, trust your gut,,,but that being said, if you contact him, ask him to call, better yet, ask for some "specific" pictures of said item,,,that ONLY he would be able to take and send to you, not a general photo taken off the internet....if he can't then he ain't got the gun in question.... 8) :roll:
good luck, as you and I both know nothing better than getting to see,touch ,feel, handle, like you can with a meet & greet ( face to face) maybe do lunch...Hey , we've done that!!! :wink:

I have news for you. Look at member profiles, and pick the one for the longest-enrolled member that contains the most detail about his life -- you still don't know diddly-squat about that person. You know only what that person posts, and not one single thing more. If you're uncomfortable dealing with someone under those circumstances, don't.

So, I just want to clarify on this post that Ron and I have resolved our mysteries and the check is in the mail for the GP I had offered him. In this day and age, I wouldn't trust many people either. Be careful out there.

A suggestion from me, and I'm just thinking here of how to avoid these situations, instead of asking about a person (me) in an open forum, ask the person (me) in the email if he can provide some references, like a local FFL, or local gun club he belongs to, or just send/ask for a phone number and talk to them, maybe it will ease some of the gut problems.

I just wanted to add, these days with our (my) urge to protect our privacy due to the many scammers, we have to find the right mix when doing business and take manual steps to sort thru the mystery instead of relying on our online footprint. Being in the IT business I know there isn't a silver bullet, we have to shoot a mix of bullets to hit our target, and being gun guys, don't we all like to shoot more

I was at the gym when MIGun posted, I was going to post this morning. He did sum it up very well.

Yes, we had several good conversations and he never shied away when I asked him to do something. My apprehensions ebbed. We worked everything out and the gun should be on it's way next week.

Sharief, you are right I probably shouldn't have posted as early as I did but you seem to realize why I did it, I am sorry. I now realize that I need to do other things before resorting to this (posting too early). That said, I have had other deals that I have backed out of because even after conversing with the sellers 2+2 didn't equal 4 and the gut feeling remained. One person, I found out later, from other FFL's, that he was a big time scammer, not just praying on people like us but good sized gun dealers (order, receive order, then claim never received order and did chargebacks.)

I spent my life working security yet my wife is by far more security conscious than me to the point of being ridiculous as we buy nothing on line or use credit cards. I am not in line with her thinking on that but for peace around here go along with her program. I am old and frankly I know I should be selling off part of my collection for her sake as she is seventeen years younger than me, not into guns and will need the money when I croak.
I never have bought nor sold anything on the net. It`s a different world than the one I was raised in. While I do spend a lot of time on the gun sites I still am not very computer literate. If you have no trust of people the world will stop. It`s a sad day when we go to circle K, buy a candy bar, and the clerk and I each hold a dollar in one hand and the candy in the other, look each other in the eyes and see who lets go first!
If everyone were as suspicious looking for a unflawed wife as we do a used as new gun with the original box and paperwork the world would stop and none of us would be here.
