I stopped at a yard sale this morning, and picked up a steel tool box with the usual assortment of trash and usable items. The real reason I bought it, however, was the data stenciled on the side:
CHEST, STEEL, M5 D28243
Inputtng this on Google brought an immediate identification. It's the issue box for tools and spare parts for a M1919 machine gun. Pre-internet, I could have searched for years before finding the answer.

Now, I need the tools and parts to go in it---and an M1919 machine gun.

Funny your mention of that as I was just looking at an "M1919" the other day at my gunsmith's shop.

This "M1919" was semi-auto only, calibe 7.62mm, and had spade grips.

Still felt the same to my hands, though.
