Starting to like this retirement thing. Had a few bluebird houses around the property that have seen better days. Ok, reality is they were starting to fall apart. Hit Home Depot a couple of weeks ago and picked up some boards after going on line and printing out the plans. Got around to starting at them this morning and have the first one done. It should be noted I'll never be known for any carpentry type skills but I'm thinking the birds won't notice. Karl

Good projects to do with young granndkids. We did one last Saturday and have two more to do this week.

Great winter activity! Curious as to the type of wood you selected. I've a lead on some rough-cut basswood through a local saw mill. Also, are you using sheet rock screws to assemble? Would love to see a pic or two!

I'm planning on making some replacement Bluebird houses, a few Wood Duck houses and a couple Wren houses. I tell you - nothing out there as territorial as those little Wrens! I'm grateful they aren't any bigger than they are!

Thanks - and stay safe!!

While I've seen bluebirds in the back yard, none have taken to the houses. The wrens beat them to it. The wrens are feisty, chattery birds.

This is the plan we are using. It's relativity easy for a supervised 7 years old to make. The hole is 1 1/2" just because that's the bit I had.

Slim: The plans I used also called for a 1 1/2 " hole. Anything larger apparently allows starlings to enter.

I love building and hanging bluebird nesting boxes. Usualy have about a dozen hanging and get a couple of nesting pairs each year. also get the swallows, chickadees and even had a flying squirrel once. Have fun! One year my wife and I watched as a big bear came around, crushed two of the nesting boxes in its jaws and ate the baby birds inside before I was able to scare it off.

The wrens WILL take over a house in a NY second. They are also extremely defensive once settled in. All the Bluebirds moved to my neighbor's houses.

Sorry about my post. Here are the plans that we are using. My 7 year old grandson has already asked his mom what time Saturday he is coming over to build the birdhouse. Thanks for the hole size, I didn't have a clue.
