Windows 10

Windows 10 was just too complicated.
I just switched back to Win 7. Lucky I got that done.

I have windows media center with music on it that will disappear if I upgrade to windows 10. I hate Microsoft with a passion. They don't tell you when it updates, and shuts down my computer at will, and I lose data monthly because of it. Grrr

Windows 8.1 has the option to check for updates but not to download updates until you decide which ones you want. Is that option available to you?

I don't know. I wouldn't know which updates I would want anyway. My putter runs fine without the dumb updates. Leave me and mine alone MS!

The linux distro I'm using currently is Mint. You can find any information about running it online. Basically you download it, run a .iso burning program and install it. Most linux distros are rather easy to install and run. If you don't want to plunge into burning disks, you can purchase them rather inexpensively.

You can even run most linux distros from the cd or usb stick without installing it. You can play around with it and see if it's for you this way.

I've tried Ubuntu, Puppy and EasyPeasy. Mint seems most intuituve for me.

I maintain a few computers some with Windows 7, 8.1, and 10.
I still prefer 7, and 10 is my least favorite.
There are many privacy issues with 8, 8.1, and even more so with 10.
Most can be dealt with though, but it takes a bit of time.
There's an article on www.OSNews.com that is helpful.
They have made a lot of the newer computers harder to install Linux on, some will only boot into 8 or 10.
If you are interested in Linux, There is a lot of information and many free operating system downloads available at distrowatch.com. Also, The Free Software Foundation at www.fsf.org is an interesting site with all kinds of useful stuff.

I still enjoy using Amiga computers the most though...
If I had more room I'd buy one of the new X1000's from A-Eon.com.
There's still quite a bit of free software available for the Amiga at Aminet.net

Windows Media center did not disappear when I installed Win 10. In fact you can set up Win 10 to look almost like Win 7. I did.

Loaded it on my laptop last night. Already running on my desk top. It looks mostly like XP with the start menu back and all. I like it. So far not a single glitch.

There are 3 different types of updates:
(1) Important
(2) Recommended
(3) Optional
I set my windows 8.1 whether to automatically install updates "not" to automatically install updates and give me "recommended" updates the same way I get "important" updates.
When I first turn on the computer for the day, from the tile screen type in "windows update" and click on the "windows update" box on the right of the screen.
A window appears, click on "check for updates". The computer then begins looking for updates.
After the search is done the number of "important" and "recommended" updates appear.
Then click the box to download the updates.
After this is done you won't be bothered for the rest of the day by updates automatically installing and slowing things down.
The important thing is not to forget to do the updates as soon as you turn on the computer for the day.

Microsoft will bypass the linux grub loader (startup) file when you update windows. I found an easy answer online with a minumum of searching.

I have rarely been pleased with ANY "updated program" from Microsoft. They screwed up Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Microsoft Word, and just about every other update they have come out with. Windows 8 had such a bad reputation they skipped using "Windows 9" for their new release and went right to "Windows 10" to distance themselves from "8". I'll stick with Windows 7 on all my computers. It works just fine.

Yes and no. Here's what ZDnet has to say about it. They also tell you how to turn off the default permissions. The problem is that most folks are used to an "opt-in" strategy, and W10 flips that on it's head and requires you to "opt-out" of many things like this.

What you need to realize is that Microsoft has made Windows 10 both a desktop and a cloud operating system. Adding cloud functionality means that when you run Windows 10 you'll be sharing far more information with Microsoft and its partner customers than ever before.

For example, while Windows 10 doesn't have a keylogger it does collect your keystrokes and voice to improve spell-checking and voice recognition. Before having a fit about this, keep in mind that every cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) program does this to one degree or another. Google Docs, Apple's Siri, Office 365, whatever -- they all collect not just your final words but every keystroke and spoken syllable that went into making those words.

It's another case with Wi-Fi Sense. You don't need to be afraid that Wi-FI Sense will let any of your Skype, Outlook, or Hotmail contacts use your Wi-Fi network without your permission. Yes, Wi-Fi Sense is on by default, but take a closer look. It doesn't permit anyone to use any of your Wi-FI networks without your specific permission.

I Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 at the end of July.

Yer not gonna get a

IT ROCKS or IT SUCKS from me yet.

Researched the hell out of it before installed it...
Supposedly, more secure, and more options...gotta admit so far,those are true.

And freely admit, LOVE the interface setup WAY MORE than the 8.1 version I had before.

Watched reports of others that upgrade to 10......
Some have ZERO PROBLEMS.....others have problems after the upgrade.....including me.
The problems I deal and dealt with....admit getting better...with every automatic update.

Just not 100% yet.

Involves the auto updates.
BEFORE, YA COULD PICK AND CHOOSE the UPDATES ya wanted to install!

Took little research to get ...if ya download it, with default settings....yer giving up a tad of privacy online.
Spent the month researching that......In my case, not seeing/giving up too much info....I'm boring. lol

And don't ask me where....but around two weeks ago saw the GEEK GODS were listing ways to curtail that....

So far....
Glad I upgraded to WINDOWS 10....for me,the setup is working better.....Even with a few GLITCHES.
