You can get it back, maybe mostly anyway. Here's how, as well as other info about Win10.

For the most part I like it. Better than 8. Don't like the automatic Window updates that you can't turn off. Also I hibernate my computer, and it takes longer to come up.

I have windows media center with music on it that will disappear if I upgrade to windows 10. I hate Microsoft with a passion. They don't tell you when it updates, and shuts down my computer at will, and I lose data monthly because of it. Grrr

I downloaded 10 Friday.
I went through a lot of stress until I finally figured everything out.
Other than that I haven't found anything different about it.
A lot of new layouts for more ads.

I'm sure there will be a lot of upgrades in a row.
Microsoft always puts out their new stuff before it is really ready.

One problem I see if I do go back to 7 it may not be for long, from what I understand Microsoft wants everyone on Windows 10 now so they can discontinue to support all of the older software.

Another thing that was upsetting when I loaded 10 it didn't save any of my personal info. all my favorites are gone all my pictures etc...... all the older windows upgrades always saved all that stuff.

I shut of "Cortana" which I find is very invasive to privacy. It also stopped the selected-for-you pop-ups. I also do not use "the Cloud" for anything and shut that feature off. I liked 7 better,.... but they are going to quit supporting it.

There's been 3 "Cumulative Updates" in the last 2 weeks. That ought to say something. http://www.computerworld.com/article/2971620/microsoft-windows/microsoft-windows-10-update-kb3081438-itbwcw.html

I upgraded the hamshack Windows 8.1 machine to Windows 10. Had to do a number of driver updates. The basic video display was the first real problem. After dealing with the video update, I installed Classic Shell. You have to workaround on that also. Rename the installation file since Microsoft does not want Classic Shell installed. It does what I need it to do. Adjusted some settings involved with updates and reporting of use etc. Easily found with a Google.

As far as my main Internet surfing and email machine in my office, that runs Linux Mint 17 and has run Linux for over 15 years.

I upgraded my laptop from 7 to 10 last week. I can no longer open options (settings) on my Firefox, and my paid-for Robo-form password manager won't work on 10. Waiting for next Robo-form upgrade to fix that. Otherwise I think I'll like it once I get through the transition bumps. Fortunately I left my desktop on 7 for now.

I plan to stay with Windows 7 as long as I can, which, from everything I read will still be good through 2020. As I understand it, the general premise of Windows 10 is geared toward mobile devices. I don't use any mobile devices other than to make that very rare call from my cellphone, which is, a pretty basic device. There's some info at the link below.

Ahhh, another neanderthal knuckledragger. I thought I was the only one here. There's a certain peace of mind that comes with being a hold out. :D Shoot, I don't even like electric can openers. This old pc I'm typing on is Vista. It works, so I'll keep using it until I'm forced to get something newer.

Every day that goes by, I'm happier and happier that I've been on Linux for the last 10 years or so. Then, there's the laptop that "The Boss" uses (and I use occasionally).... still running Vista. We have Windows 8 at the gun club.... darned if I can figure out how to do anything on it.

If it works, why does Microsoft keep fixin' it? Haven't they ever heard the old adage, "If it works, don't fix it."?

Considering how often I have to get a new PC (about every 5 years) I'll keep this Windows 8 machine without the touch screen for a couple more years without upgrading. "Don't fix what ain't broken", plays in my head. When it comes time to get a new machine I'm sure they will all be Windows 10. :D

It's all about sales.

From what I've read on the "Windows 10 Forum", it's better to wait until the bugs are ironed out. My "Windows 10 Home" upgrade is presently sitting in "Hidden Updates" and I have until July 29, 2016 to decide whether I want it or not.
I'm using Windows 8.1 now and for what I use my laptop for it's fine with me. As it stands now I probably will not upgrade to Windows 10. I don't need any more computer PIA's. :)

Windows 8.1 has the option to check for updates but not to download updates until you decide which ones you want. Is that option available to you?

The linux distro I'm using currently is Mint. You can find any information about running it online. Basically you download it, run a .iso burning program and install it. Most linux distros are rather easy to install and run. If you don't want to plunge into burning disks, you can purchase them rather inexpensively.

You can even run most linux distros from the cd or usb stick without installing it. You can play around with it and see if it's for you this way.

I've tried Ubuntu, Puppy and EasyPeasy. Mint seems most intuituve for me.

I have 8.1 and also have a little "Get Windows 10" notice in the start menu that I have told the wife to NEVER 'click' on.

You can hide that icon. Can't get rid of it, but you can move it off the toolbar/start menu.

When I bought my laptop back in 2009, it came with windows "Vista" on it and was such a pain in the Gazzooo that When I decided to update (2010), I went ahead and paid for Windows 7 PRO and have yet to regret it. They are going to have to wait for the President or Pope to FART on live TV camera BEFORE I switch to Windows 10.
My old desk top pc is STILL running whatever came before Vista and it's Predecessor

I rather liked Win 98. I finally went to XP when SP3 came out. I am still using it with no problems. I do keep my shields on and up to date and run Malwarebyte several times a month. I also have a program which will not allow changes to my start menu without my express permission. I am familiar with Vista, 7, and 8.1. None of them offer any features I care about.
