Wiley Clapp GP100 observations

Just received my Gp100 Wiley Clapp edition and am very happy. I had read all the reviews online and watched the YouTube videos. The main things I noticed compared to my older (170- model) stainless 4" are as follows.
All the edges have been rounded off very nicely.
The warnings on the barrel are very minimal on the Wiley and the address changed from Southport conn, to Newport nh.
The trigger in double action feels way lighter and much smoother, single action feels real close.
The 3 inch barrel gives the whole gun a much lighter and compact feeling to me.
I noticed the machining looks much better (maybe the sandblasted type finish smooths out machining marks?)
The grips are much nicer in hand than pictures show. The wiley clapp version rubber part appears to be one piece instead of the split rubber on my older model. The wooden inserts look better on the Wiley but look almost like plastic.
The trigger appears to be mim on the newer WC (hollow back versus solid on the 170-)
Hopefully can make it to the range this week to see how it shoots!

My brother also has a WC GP100. He picked it as a dual purpose Revolver. His larger size concealed carry revolver as well as full size IDPA SSR Revolver.
We ran his by to see Ron Power to have the Chambers Chamfered for speedier reloads. Ron is an old friend of mine, and he has been tuning on my Smith & Wesson Revolvers for over 20 years.
While we were in the shop talking about improvements we were making at the Sportsman's Club, New parts he is marketing at Power Custom, etc. Ron kept on working on the Ruger. When Ron was finished, I was amazed at the end product. He had given it the complete Combat Revolver treatment. I have read time and again that a Ruger just cannot be tuned to the same level as a Smith & Wesson. I am now of the opinion the folks making that statement need another Gunsmith.

For our Outlaw IDPA Match he is reloading using Safariland Comp III Speed Loaders carried in Safariland 333 Speed Loader Carriers. (Note: the Safariland 333 is not an IDPA approved Carrier)

I've been lusting after a 3" gp100 lately. The Wiley clap one is sweet! I really like the small grip.

What I really want is a 2-1/4" fixed sight one with the small grip. Ed

You will not believe ths, but the Wiley Clapp Edition 3" does not come with the Compact 3" Snub Grips.
The grips that come on it are a really nicely made version of the Full Size Panel Grips. The rubber part is very nicely done. The panels are laser cut, and like wise look very nice. I have no idea why Talo did not have a really nice set of Compact Panel Grips made for the Wiley Clapp Edition. After all it is designed as a carry revolver.

I have a set of new Compact Grips. I have offered to let my brother put them on his WC GP100. He will not put the smaller compact grips on his, because the Full Size grips look so good.

I was going by the pictures on rugers web sight. The talo edition has much nicer grips than the regular 3". I thought they were compact. The grip on the regular 3" are way way too big.

So the ones youhave are even smaller than the Wiley Clap ones? If you want to sell them shoot me a pm. Thanks Ed

Not a Clapp edition but a stainless 3" with compact grips to illustrate the size.

For me the full size grips look and feel HUGE on the 3-inch GP.

Nice gun hittman that is just what I want. Looks like a speed six on steroids! How does it handle?

These handle wonderfully. Enough weight to soak up a hot 357 load but small enough to carry in the winter with the proper holster and clothing for cover. I really really like the snubbies but will always prefer the Six Series.

Triggers on new GPs are MIM, hammers will remain cast.

Finally got to the range with the Wiley Clapp, I put a set of the compact grips on it before taking it out and its a keeper! Balances and feels so much better than my 4". The trigger feels much nicer also. Sights are a definite improvement too! The only thing i'm not 100% pleased about is the Matte finish. It was harder to clean

I am a little confused by the larger grips on this gun. It seems like everything else about it screams carry but they went with the larger grips. Honestly, I kinda wish that they had stuck with the trench sight too.

Or made this a 4" gun. I really like the WC but I am not going to buy one because I would never carry it with the fullsize grips on it and it seems like such a waste to change them. I'll stick with my Speed Six for now.

But those are just my personal opinions on it. I'm certianly not trying to take anything away from those of you who like the gun and own one. It's a fantastic piece and if I had money for safe queens I would have bought one right away. It is still an awesome gun and worth owning if you have the extra money.

I agree about the grips, but the WC grips are alot better than the ones they are putting on the regular GP100's. Ruger needs to wake up and get better grips for the snub nose GP. IMHO.

If the WC GP100's were Mass. compliant I'd own two of them. Seems to be the best configured revolver since the Speed Six was discontinued. Again just my opinion. Ed

The best Ruger DA action ever for me!

I can see why guys who own both the S&W 686 TALO and the Wiley Clapp TALO favor the WC.

It only needs a tritium front sight (coming from NOVAK's later this year) and some grip experimentation.

I'm thinking that the Hogue Ruger GP100/Super Redhawk Rubber Tamer Grip
might be better for concealment.

It would give me/us the same grip material as the LCRs, but probably not be as large
as the Hogues that come on some GP-100s.

They have a decent price.

As for the Novak front sights, they told me that they don't make one quite yet for the the GP-100.

That doesn't mean that a Novak or any other front sight won't work.

Would any of you WC owners consider using a Kydex holster for your gun?

I've read where owners say the finish is prone to scratching?

I wouldn't, mine has scratches from the factory. Would like to know an easy way to remove them but the WC finish is like light sandblast.

Yes, I'm not saying that kydex would scratch it, but don't really know.
