George Phillips, an elderly man from Walled Lake, Michigan, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turnoff the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.
He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?"
He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me."
Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy, you should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available"
George said, "Okay." He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again.
"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both; the dogs are eating them right now," and he hung up.
Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a helicopter, two fire trucks, a paramedic and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed.
One of the Policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"
George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

Some years back (when New York city was really dangerous) I had a friend that told me they warned the young women that walked the streets at night that if they should get attacked to scream "Fire" over and over as loud as they could...seems nobody would "get involved" in a case of assault or rape but when they heard "fire" they immediately called for help...sort of like my "beware of dog" signs on my fences...no dog...just signs..but there is a really nasty great dane next door that makes a lot of racket...

Reminds me of the morning the young "adults" across the street were playing football in the street before the crack of dawn and woke me and the neighbors up. Since was the only person who would talk to them I asked them to stop. That ddn't work so I warned them. That didn't work si I called the cops. They came out and asked the guys to stop. Then the cop told me they really weren't breaking any laws. I asked, "how about disturbing the peace?".
He said no. So I asked what would they do if I fired a shotgun. It's not illegal to fire a gun, is it?
No, it wasn't but he would have to cite me for....disturbing the peace! So I just said next time THEY will be the ones firing the shotgun.

I've heard this one several times with one exception. They guy, before
hanging up the first time just said, "OK, then I'll just shoot them", hung up
and reportedly got much the same response. :D

I have to admit that the little unincorporated area I live in has pretty darned good police response. Actually we have the Los Angeles County Sheriff here. They seem to be a cut above the LAPD.

Try that sometime -- then give us a full report on what it's like being arrested for making a false report to police.

An oldie but still entertaining. Snopes put it to rest as fiction. http://www.snopes.com/crime/safety/response.asp

The problem comes when/if you tell the 911 operator you've shot someone. Anyone. You've just made a homicide confession and believe me, saying "Well I just made it up" makes the active-shooter-scenario responding officers and county Prosecutor vewy vewy angwy.

Recent thoughts and CCW teachings advise simply dialing 911 (on a land line) and saying nothing at all - every sound on a 911 call can only be used against you.

This is why the Miranda warning says, "ANYTHING you say CAN and WILL be used AGAINST you."

It was meant to be funny not a true story from the files of the F B I ! "Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth!"
