I've used the Otis system on rifles like the Mini 14 and M1A, where you can't get at the bore any other way that through the muzzle. It works fine, though obviously you can't get the same kind of "scrubbing action" as you can with a standard rod.
I'd rather use an Otis system on a MkI-III, for instance, than a bore snake that never gets cleaned...
But then, I'm also of the school that says .22 LR bores need very little maintenance. I generally dry-patch or brush them once in a while, just to knock out anything loose. The rest of the gun gets cleaned and maintained like any of my others.
