I stopped by my gunsmith's this morning, just to let him know I was still around so they wouldn't break my plate. Sort of touching base.

There was on the counter a ruptured barrel from a Dan Sesson. There was one bullet near the muzzle, one directly behind it, and the third which resulted in the burst. This a 6" full lug barrel/shroud assembly. The rupture was about 2" back from the muzzle, and it had split upwards and forward under the rib, and blew out the front sight.

They had asked the owner if he didn't notice anything unusual and his reply was that "a few rounds didn't sound right" but he kept on shooting anyway, until the barrel blew up. It was then that he suspected something was amiss.

When dealing with explosives, "Doesn't sound/feel right" is a good reason to cease and investigate.

“Didn’t sound right” should have been his first clue. Tell your gunsmith to charge him enough so he learns a good lesson from it.

I saw an 8 3/8's M29 Smith once that had a huge cyl. gap. It just happened to have 5 bullets in the barrel. Nothing broke, split, or blew, just every bullet smacking against the next, stretched everything on the gun to the point the action wouldn't work to fire the last round. I opened the cyl. with a wood mallet.

Years ago a gunsmith friend showed me a s&w m&p a guy brought in with the entire barrel plugged with about six bullets in it! The barrel wasn't hurt!

That shooter is lucky it was a Dan Wesson-replacing the barrel is a lot easier.

First I am really surprised the shooter didn't stop to see what wasn't right. Secondly I find myself wondering if they were shooting commercially loaded ammunition or their own reloads.

I recently found this one on the "Wall of shame" at a gun shop.





The story behind this one is a good lesson on quality holsters----it fell out of an old worn out holster, bounced off a couple of places before hitting the ground and being run over by a brush hog mower. 1 round was discharged but no evidence of where it went or ended up. I told them if it were mine, I would send it on back and see if the warranty might cover it.

That must be some sorry metal. You could drop that from the top of the Washington Monument and not cause that much damage. Also, the last brush hog I saw had rubber wheels. I might have to raise the BS flag on that explanation.

My guess is YOU NEVER ran a Brush Hog Have You? Brush hog will chew up a revolver and spit it out.
And that is exactly how it looks to me! Got a 6 footer I use in my fields darn piece
of granite ledge that sticks up hit that sob every year damn! believe or not it chipping
away at it. ps

When I "bush-hog", if I can run over it with the tractor, it gets bush-hogged. A big enough tractor with a big enough bush-hog could make a `59 Cadillac look just like that.

FYI, Bush Hog is a brand that became a household name and generic term like Kleenex, Vise-Grip or ChannelLock.

Yes indeed a brush hog could do that. In our shop when I was with the FAA we had a tractor mounted one that used a blade and a chain. That thing once cut off a piece of 2" pipe stuck in the ground. I don't think it would have had a second's problem with a snubby.

I guess to clarify---what I call a brush hog is a slow moving blade x2 or 4 that is PTO driven off the back of a tractor. I have watched my neighbor run his over rocks the size of basketballs and keep right on going. Yes it does make some horrid noises and the look on the operators face is something to be seen. I guess they do have some sort of sheer key/pin that will break if you his something tough enough.
