Hogue has been in the grip biz for a very long time, and they have skilled people making them who know how to choose fine wood. Btw, that isn't spalted, it's from a crotch.

Hogue does indeed make some fine grips. I have a number of their product. Never disappointed.
These cocobolo specimens are among my favorites.

I think the problems with those resulted from the grip frames not being polished quite enough, not the grips themselves.

I tried putting Hogue grips on my Vaquero and couldn't get a good fit
