Okay, here is that other story I was referring to in my last post. The short version. About 1975 I and a girl were driving through downtown Los Angeles. I had a 1964 Cadillac Coupe Deville. She was driving. The car wasn't my main ride and I only had liability on it. We got T-boned by two drunks that came out of a bar`s parking lot. Got hit in my passenger door. They scratched out. I told Diane, catch up, I need that plate number. (No uninsured motorist insurance). The guys were driving a hot new Mach something Ford. They went on the freeway with Diane in hot pursuit. I had turned a tiger or Angie Dickenson loose! (Police woman). They got off at a off ramp with her on their tail probably thinking she couldn't hang with them in the short fast turn. They zoomed into a large parking garage knocking off the arm in front of the toll booth. I noticed a black attendant diving out of the shack. They took a dead end and she blocked them. Now the driver put it in reverse and hit us again. She was backing up. I was yelling for her to stop as my door wouldn't open. She was yelling I am going to get those "fatherless gentlemen". They did get her to back up as they backed into our front end a couple times. Then they spun out going to the next level and she broadsided them! Now she did get out. I had to slide out on her side. I noticed my Smith Model 60 (Same gun as in my MC accident prior post) had slid out from hiding under the drivers seat. I grabbed it up, went to the drivers door and yelled for him to get out. He instead locked themselves in. In a stupid moment I hit his window with the gun to inspire him to get out. He did. He was a Latino. Maybe no paperwork? Hey mun, why de gawn? Can not we settle thees without gawns? That was too much for me and I said yeah, put the smith in my left and gave him a roundhouse with my right. Then the other guy came around and said he would keel me if I did not have that gun. Now I was hot. I stupidly gave Diane the gun. The guy backed off and tried kicking me as I advanced. Then I hear Diane yelling to the other guy who had got up to back off or she would shoot him! She had the gun in both hands and the fool was actually stumbling towards her! Things had got out of hand. I walked over and took the gun from her. I told her to take our car and go find some cops. She left. I held the two. While we were waiting they were rehearsing their story. The story was to be they ran because I had pulled the gun on them after the first "accident". Along with that they kept telling me after this was over they would hunt me down and keel me. I kept them about 15 feet away. I seen two guys walking like they was going to go past us through the building. Civilian cloths but I knew. At the moment I had my gun in my pocket with my hand on it. I called the guys over, "Are you security"? They were. I briefly told them what happened, noticed one did have a gun in his waistband and told them I have a gun in my pocket. I am going to pull it out and give it to you. I did. Then a cruiser pulled up with two cops with a shotgun on me and patted me down. Other, eventually many other cruisers pulled up. Diane in the back seat of one. It looked like the entire shift or a police funeral! Diane was heaping coal`s on the guys heads. Said they threw plastic bags out of their car while she was chasing them etc. Funny, I didn't see that.
They took us to the station and I had to fill out some paperwork etc. At one point one of the cops had ME unload my revolver. He couldn't as I used to carry a shot load on top. Lived on the desert and it was for rattlers. When I had hit the car window with the gun that Speer shot capsule hand-load had jarred forward tying up the gun! Eventually the two lead officers took us to see the watch-master. He asked the cops what to do with us. They just grinned and said nothing. I knew what was coming off but could see Diane was scared. The old watch commander pointed at me and said put him in jail and throw "Barney Oldfield" in there with him! Then the cops drove us back to my car, gave me my gun AND ammo back to me.
No, I wouldn't want that to try that again. Things dont always go like you suspect they would/should EVEN in California. Yes, I know they checked me out, and I did have a "OPEN CARRY LICENSE FOR UNIFORM ONLY" but I was off duty from my guard job and not in uniform. I talked to one of the cops about it and he told me I didn't get hooked up because of my "Demeanor", but I already knew that. Don`t count on it though. It probably didn't hurt that there were already warrants out on the driver, but I never did ask what for.
