vaquero grip change

even though its a 32-20, i still practice fast draw with it. easier on my wrist than 45lc.
my draw is "odd" and i tend to bruise my palm with "standard grip styles.
so i modified my vaquero to this style.
i shoot better and less pain at the end of the day. grinder and metal files took about 10 hours. i'm sending it to a metal polisher to put the shine back on the stainless. $100 total expense. ( i used the original micarta grips)

I like that shape a lot. I shoot with my pinky under the grip so I usually round the sides of the grip panels at the bare minimum.

I think you could polish the sanding marks out yourself with very little trouble. I use the foam backed nail files from Wal-Mart, they come in different grit and easily handle odd shapes.

I would keep the Mikarta. In fact if your not going to use those untouched grips and if there Mikarta I would be interested in em.
AND as mentioned by mt. go get some of those foam backed nail boards they go to 100-600 and I would pick up a sheet of 1000,1500,2000 and then hit it with a flitz, will be better than new.
maybe $15 in materials.

This same process will work on the mikarta too.

If you do decide to send it off or do-it-yourself, make sure you or they stay away from the edges that meet the cylinder frame, if the grip frame is off the gun. It ever so lightly rounds the edges off and when it gets put back together looks like crap.

Me; I gut the gun, re-mount the grip frame and sand away to 2000 then a little flitz. Clean it up and re-assemble.

This is not hard to do at all and results are impressive. It will take a little time, I heard you work for free.

Nice job, but just get yourself some 6" buffing wheels and a cheap bench grinder and a little stainless polishing compound and finish it yourself. You can polish up the Micarta grips with it too.

You do know that Ruger actions were never intended for fast draw, right? Very hard on the stock guns.

As for the yay, or nay. It's about what you want.

I agree with the DIY crowd. Pick up some wet dry sandpaper of different grits, use mineral spirits for the wet sanding. Back the paper with some steel or brass, and spend a couple of more hours.

Looks good.

Looks real good! The grip shape looks awsome, Like others have said give it a try and polish it out your self fine emery wet dry and then try some mothers mag polish.
