Congrats on your new to you Vaquero. Mine is a 1997 year 56- picked up Sunday at the gun show. It's a 5.5" .357 and it is HEAVY. I'm sure it will have negligible recoil. It was a serious working gun from a hard working man based on the wear. I swapped on a set of Altamont Santos Rosewood grips because even really hard working rough worn men get to wear their good suit sometimes. After photo is with its Super Wrangler cousin that also got a nice new suit.

Good choice! Stainless or Blue/CCH? Barrel length? Details important.
I have been able to pick up two 44-40s over the years, one in SS with a 4 5/8" barrel and one Blue/CCH with a 7 1/2" barrel.
With 44-40 ammo being hard to find from time to time, look for a New Model Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum cylinder to make a convertible. Ruger used the same barrel diameter for their 44-40 and 44 Mag Vaqueros.

The .44mag cylinder is out of my SBH for test fitting. It is a little tight. Ebay has a .44mag cylinder for sale.

Because it is an odd ball cartridge, make him a reasonable offer. Mine is going to live as a 44mag.
 
.44-40 would be great! Less recoil than the equivalent .44 Special round. All the Starline brass one could want. What's not to like?
 
44-40 is the odd ball of the collection. Really all I would need is dies.

Quik update on the 44mag cylinder. I filled the cylinder to fit. Then I checked the timing and alignment. Everything looked good so I got some 44mag cowboy loads to test fire. I ran the box of 50 through it with no issues. I pulled the cylinder and checked for bullet shavings. The forcing cone and barrel look good. I then ran starting loads of cfe pistol and 200gn hornady ftx bullets. Happy. Happy. Happy.
