After reading various posts about the ultradot, I have purchased it for my super redhawk .44. My question is: do I need a base for it or will it be secure enough in the cutouts where the rings go?

I mounted mine directly to the cutouts. No base required, one of the main reason i like the Super. I have had my Ultra-Dot mounted for 2 years, with no problems. I also have the 44 mag Super

That all depends on the model. An Ultradot 25 or 30 will fit between the factory rings (25mm or 1-inch are what comes with the gun but Ruger also makes a 30mm replacement). Which one did you get?

I returned my rings to Ruger in exchange for a 30mm set when mounting the Ultra Dots on two of my SRH 's. No additional mounting parts were ended.

Better to mount directly to the gun. There are 30mm extension rings available that fit the MatchDot and the like. I have an UltraDot 25 on mine and it works great.

I put the Matchdot with Leupold extension rings on mine.
