This woman tried to get an early start to the 4th of July celebration by taking her car airborne and landing it on a boat dock. Fortunately she wasn't seriously hurt. ...and this after another guy jumped one of our draw bridges as it was going up. Said he was looking at his navigation display. 8)

It isn't just Florida drivers.

And, unfortunately, MANY of the same type of drivers from Florida visit NC a LOT during our summer months. They get to our curvy roads, stomp the brakes, & act as if they will break their arms if they have to turn the steering wheel to make the curve. We followed a Floridiot (local term for them,) yesterday across a mountain at 10 & 15 mph. There were 23 cars behind them, and they never ONCE thought about pulling off the road to allow traffic to pass in the many places they could have pulled over. When we finally got to an area that was 4 lanes, they sped up, and kept themselves in the left lane. We all passed them on the right. (They still hadn't gotten up to the speed limit.)

It is drivers everywhere that cell phones work. They seriously need a law and the technology that shuts down electronic devices, including GPS' when vehicles are in motion.

I know, I know someone is going to ask what good a GPS is if it doesn't work when you are driving. But, we did just fine with maps. Of course a map requires that you pull over, open it up and look at it. Sure there were a few idiots that tried to drive and look at a map, but they were fewer and further in between.

Contender, they are called 'half backs' these are the folks that retired to sunny Florida after living and working their whole lives in the great white North... then they discover what summer is really like in the deep South and what hot and humid really is and so they decide to move half way back.

Twice this week: I followed a "drunk" blue-hair in a Buick and a "leatherhead" ancient cowboy in a dually farm truck - both weaving across the centerlines, both had little dogs on their laps, hopping around from window to window across the wheel and in their drivers' line of sight! Only an afternoon of drinking can make for a more un-safe driver!

Leave the dogs home!

Two weeks before high school graduation I stopped my hot-rodded '68 Nova at a malfunctioning light. Idiot woman behind me in a Galaxy 500 was talking to her dog. I spent the next to the last week of high school in the hospital. Totaled my car. She was on welfare, no license or insurance.

blume,,, I have a much more detailed description for them Floridiots. I created it many years ago & have often repeated it.
It goes like this;

"A Floridiot is a blue haired, near dead, condo commando, Geritol sucking arsehole, that retired up north, moved south to Florida, found out they didn't like the heat, couldn't speak spanish & moved half way back to be a pain in our arse & change everything like it was where they left from."

As a Florida born and bred (30 years) individual, I can honestly say that, at least up 'til 2000, the vast majority of the idiot drivers in the Slumshine state were transplanted yankees. I have safely drag raced, road raced, and off-roaded for years, as well as driven hundreds of thousands of wreck-free miles on US Hwy 19 (one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the U.S.). I am one of the most courteous, competent, and alert drivers one will meet, and most of the natives I knew were also very good drivers. 95% of the cornhole drivers I encountered on the streets of Florida hailed from either New York, New Jersey, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, or anywhere in Canada. (Out here in Wyoming, I still see Canucks driving like absolute imbeciles, so my guess is that our neighbors to the north place very little emphasis on driving ability.) And no matter from whence one hails, electronic devices DO diminish whatever abilities and reflexes are there to begin with.

I must agree that most people in Florida are not from Florida so when I say typical Florida drivers I'm not talking about those folks that were born and raised here like myself, I'm talking about those that just happened to end up here. 8)

I was recently in Fla on vacation and saw many bad drivers. However, no one I met was from Fla. Everone I talked to was a tourist. The natives are seriously outnumbered.

Yup. Most of the drivers in Florida are not Floridians, but they do teach some Floridians their bad driving habits. We few real Floridians can't win for loosing :shock: :? :evil:
Then many of them go "halfback" to where they came from :roll:

and at Contender: now you know why we like to go to the Carolinas and Tennessee in the Fall and Winter. We rather creep along without having wall-to-wall creepers :lol: :lol:

Oh, I figured those of you who had spent any time in Florida were well aware of the disproportionate number of "out-of-towners" in the state, and I certainly took no offense at any of the comments. I was just chiming in with my personal experience as a minority of the state. :mrgreen:

No offense here either. Funny, tho, one of my best friends for many many years is from Nu Yawk. A better driver cannot be found. He left New York by joining the USN, getting stationed at NAS Pensacola and marrying one of our local girls....grrrrrrrrr. Now he talks about "them D**n Yankees" :lol:

I have to agree, I had a good friend who had moved down here, to work not retire, that was from New York State (not the city but way west of there) and he was one of the best drivers I've every rode with... in fact on road trips, I'd rather he drive than me..... then again he retired and moved to Florida and that killed him......
