Was sitting watching TV tonight and "Tombstone" came on Direct TV on channel 327 CMT.

Even thought I had a couple Netflix movies here to watch, I decided I'd watch Tombstone again. Ok so I'm watching it and the first commercial break comes on. My mind was drifting off and I thought there was a lot of commercials until the movie came back on.

So, I watched until the next commercial break came on. This time I counted the commercials. There was exactly 20 different commercials in that one break. That was all I could take, I quit watching it.

According to Netflix, Tombstone is 130 minutes long. The tv time slot for Tombstone to run was 210 minutes long. So that means there was one hour and twenty minutes of commercials that would run during the movie.

I have a DVR and I never watch anything that runs in it's initial time slot. I always record what I want to watch and then fast forward through the commercials. I actually forgot how annoying those commercials could be. An hour and twenty minutes of commercials through a two hour and ten minute movie is just outrageous.

I won't make that mistake again, I'll stick to the DVR.

Back in the mists of time IIRC there was an FCC rule that governed the amount of time commercials could take up in any program. That may have been pre-cable when there were only 4 to 5 national channels.

I too was watching that movie and told the wife that the commercials started a 7 minutes prior to the hour and ran till 2 after the hour. I ended up just turning it off and watched something else.

Just how many times do you need to see Viagra and Cialis commercials in any given day let alone one stinkin show. Just about burned out on tv, just watch a few shows now, mostly seasonal shows like Longmire, and Justified etc. I have lost any interest in network tv at all. Nothing worth watching, news is all propaganda and I hate reality shows. Sorry for the hijack and rant.

That is what's nice about Direct TV's dvr. If you're a Justified fan, just two presses of a button on your remote and it's set to record all the new episodes of the show.

I did that years ago and every season it knows when Justified returns and still records it even if I've forgotten all about it.

A little over a year ago, I dropped my local liberal propaganda sheet AKA my daily news(?)paper and cable TV. No antenna to pick up the local channels and the wife and I just watch one of the movies from out extensive DVD collection.
I remmeber many long years ago where a Senator was investigating communism in Hollywood. A fw people in la la land lost their jobs or were blacklisted and supposedly could not work in the film industry anymore. Hell! The just changed their names and went back to work. Film stars couldn't get away with that though. That Senator was not only riduculed but lost the next election. Today, look at the biggest stars in Hollywood today and tell me, how many of the top dogs are conservatives? I'd bet just about 99 percent are all card carrying liberals and big time Obama supporters. Just my personal opinion but I think the commies rule Hollywood. Remember when Tom Selleck took on fat Rosie? Haven't seen a hell of a lot of work from him since. If he has worked they've sure kept it quiet.
I don't support the Hollyweird liberals. I go to a swap meet where there is a lady who sells used DVDs. Price is right and the libs get no cash from me. If a movie is in bad shape, she makes the exchange, no charge. Good deal for me and she makes her money too. I haven't been in a sit down movie hour in years. I can remember the last two time. One was Quest for Fire and the other Fireproof and that one only because my wife dragged me to go see it. Seems like our church had a special showing set up.
I know what WE THE PEOPLE need to do but I guess it's pre-ordained that we sit fat dumb and happy. After all, it's been foretold In Revelations and apparently nobody's listening.

Congratulations you seem to have crawled into your own little hole and shut out the world. I fail to see how that makes you any better off than I am. Why don't you just check into a monastery?

There are other people that live without things also, they're called "poor". Are they better off than me? If you want to do without things that's fine but don't try to tell me you're making the world better for me.

You seem to be so down on the entertainment industry but in the end you watch the movies anyway. I don't believe you get those movies absolutely free. Why don't you just put your money where your mouth is and not watch them at all?

2nd one down, no commercials.

So...what are you suggesting, that I sit and watch a movie on my computer screen? No thanks.

Your choice. Just an option for you. Sorry if I offended you. If you have a big enough screen on your computer its not bad. There's also the option of getting something like Google chromecast or Apple TV and streaming it wireless to your TV.

We have two channels that I enjoy, TCM and a local broadcast channel, both of which show movies without commercial interruption.

But the commercials are getting tastesless, the advertising would be very embarressing if company were visiting. (Embarresing enough just Nita and me.) And many leave Nita and me wondering "what were they advertising?" And the shows we have to turn off because of vulgarity and/or profanity are causing us to seriously consider dropping cable.

10-4 on TCM Bob! That is the ONLY channel I ever watch. The wife has a few 'girl channels' that she likes, but I can't do it. I gave up network television in 1968 over content and commercials. Haven't ever looked back...

redhawker,

I don't see anything in what I said that indicates any offense what so ever in any way shape or form.

And who made you God the father? How dare you judge me for decisions I made. I guess you think all those Hollywood "stars" walk on water. No, the movies are not free but they are purchased USED. You do understand the word "used" don't you?
Guess I must have struck a nerve.

I don't care about your decisions. It's your words in red above that I object to. You seem to have indicated that since I watch TV, I'm sitting fat dumb and happy. That's how dare I.

I don't care what Hollywood stars do. Their lives mean nothing to me. If I want to watch a movie I will watch it. I don't go to theaters. I watch everything from Netflix.

Did you really think everyone was going to applaud you for your lifestyle?

how many stinken insurance commercials can they jam in there?

Here in Florida, we seem to be getting ALL the Personal Injury Lawyer ads. Had an accident, look us up for a BIG pay off <OVER AND OVER AND OVER>. Those get alternated wit, "If you have been taking THIS medicine and your out gassing stinks (okay, use your imagination) call us because we have a billion dollar settlement. Lately, I would SWEAR that they are reading those inserts you get with every Med that lists ALL the possible negative things that can happen with the med (AS REQUIRED by Law) and then offering to SUE if you have "suffered" any of those.
I think its WAY past time to shut down those crooks and institute some major tort reform.

It use to be that Commercials took about 4 or 5 minutes of the programming time,; NOW they use up over 10+ minutes out of every half hour and are MULTIPLE brain numbing over and over repeats with an ANNOYING THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP drumbeat to all of them. THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP.

Yeah, I agree. Watching 20 commercials in one shot started to make the veins in my head go THUMP THUMP THUMP. I don't think I've ever seen that many in one commercial break before.

I have a DVD set of old crime shows, Dragnet, Peter Gunn, I'm sure remember them. They even include the commercial. One night while watching them I timed the commercials. Two and one half minutes in the middle of the show and one minute at the beginning and end. Some shows the total commercial time was a whole five minutes. I dunno what the cost of a minute's worth of commercial is during prime time but I'd bet it's at least 6 figures or more. Those networks are laughing all the way to the bank.

Cary, I think you missed my point. By WE THE PEOPLE I was not specifying you and not most of those here on the site. Look around and listen sometime. I don't hear people talking about the government and the criminal acts they perpetrate on WE THE PEOPLE. No because apparently which team won whatever game is a hell of a lot more important, or who won Dancing With The Stars. I can't figure out if the majority in this country are that stupid or whether they're so engrossed in themselves that they don't give a damn what Obama and his crew do. My point is I do give a damn. That's the frustration.

Last week I was watching a clip on youtube. It was about ten minutes long, and at around the six minute mark it stopped for a commercial! Never seen that before. I predict that in a few years when you dial 911 you'll have to listen to a commercial before they'll complete your call.

No worries. I guess I just took it wrong. One of the hazards of not being able to see facial expressions or hear voice inflection over a computer.

Cary C: Wow, relax. I noticed you balked at watching TV on your computer. I sure remember when I was young and had to buy my own TV it had a 19 inch screen and was huge. I had to buy it on a rent to own kind of thing because it was $400 and that was in 1980. I think I could live on a 19 inch HD screen now for a couple hundred dollars. Wow, how soon we forget what we had and what we have now. Again, relax, it is not something to get upset about. It is a pastime, like baseball, football, pool, etc.. It is supposed to relax, enjoy and sometimes participate in. Don't sweat the small stuff.

I think you're assuming that everyone has a lap top computer which they could open up while sitting in their recliner chair. I don't have one. Never had the need for one or the urge to buy one.

Think that might make a difference in watching a movie on a computer? Why does everyone assume I'm so upset because someone suggested that I watch a movie on my computer and I said, no thanks? How in the world does that translate to me being upset?

Yeah, I remember when the cable first came out. Pay your monthly fee and you won't have to suffer through all those commercials. Well now we have 80 channels full of crap drowning in commercials for a hundred dollars, or more, a month.

Since I have finally mastered the internet I'm thinking about going back to the rabbit ears for nothing a month.
