TV commercials in Spanish

Contender and possibly a few others will appreciate this.. for years my wife's family had a vacation home up in the N.C. mountains above Asheville ... there was a local guy Hoover who sometimes would cut the grass and do other small things... he would often show up on a Saturday afternoon with a piddly pile of firewood to sell, I presume so he could go back over the mountain and pick up a pint of shine... the interesting thing was it was a struggle to understand him he was speaking a true mountain dialect.
When I was a kid I worked with a lot of migrant workers from all over.
I took the time to listen and learn and I was able to understand them.
To this day I can decipher most things and am glad that I can. I worked with Geechees and Jamaican and am still friends with VinceMon who has the most delightful accent.
The other day I was in Home Depot and there is a Jamaican working there. I started talking to her in island lingo and she got the biggest smile on her face. She was amazed that I understood it.

Its all due to the dumbing down and "progressivism" that has engulfed our nation. A few generations back Americans were proud of being Americans, and expected new arrivals to learn American culture and language or starve. This was certainly rough on the immigrants, but within a few years their children spoke English and were thoroughly Americanized. On my father's side, his father arrived here speaking Russian. He died in the late 1950's and never mastered English very well, and suffered financially for his failure to assimilate fully. But his son, my father, who arrived here as a toddler, became a real American because he had to. Schools taught in English, all official government business was only in English, etc.

The solution is to end bilingual education and to return to an "English only" government. If immigrants can't fill out a voter registration card because it is in English, so be it. Driver's license tests should only be in English. And if courts and hospitals and other places did not have an obligation to find and pay translaters for 132 different languages, immigrants would quickly learn English or give up and return to their home country.

The solution is simple, but I doubt that the typical Democrat voters would even consider supporting an "English only" society, saying it is "unfair" or "racist".

Senator Hiakawa in Ssn Francisco tried to get English as the official and only language used in the United States back in the late 60’s and it failed, obviously, but as a non Anglo-Saxon he understood the importance of a common language and culture.

S.i.hayakawa, havent heard the name in years. Iirc he had a handful of books on the english language. Not to be confused with sessue hayakawa. As the head of san francisco college and still a democrat before he ran for senator as a republican, he went to the sound van of a black panther demand rally on campus and pulled the speaker wires out.
