Traveling through the Northeast with a weapon

the problem with what kind of knife to carry that is legal is I've never been trained to use a knife for self defense.... I have been trained to use a handgun... something like over 200 hours the last time I checked....
I do carry a knife always but it is for other uses... rule #9.

At 88+ years old I am a firm believer in "survival of the fittest". While I would NEVER openly suggest anything illegal, I can say that I will be prepared to do just that; survive, and really don't give one hoot in hell what State I am in.

It is a shame that the NE is like that, there are some beautiful places out there. NJ has some really good Sporting Clay Events but I will not go because of their gun laws. I was going to go visit my uncle in NJ last year and hand deliver a rifle to G&H to be refinished but after doing some research I decided shipping the rifle would be much wiser!

My wife & I are traveling to Rhode Island for an oceanfront overnight trip. Since there's no reciprocity between any of the NE states with CT. carrying a gun is out. I thought I could carry a belt knife so I had some kind of defensive weapon. In RI you can carry any size knife openly but not concealed. Trouble is you can't carry a knife over 4 inches in CT even in your vehicle. Figured I'd carry a 3 3/4" folding knife with a pocket clip legal in Ct. However as soon as I crossed into RI with a knife in my pocket I'm committing a felony because RI doesn't allow CC of a knife. You really have to do your homework before you do any traveling so you don't commit a felony and lose your carry rights/permit altogether.

I have had twin 1968 case XX M3F bird and fish knife on my belt my whole life, and NEVER had a problem in ANY state, yet caught crap for a clip folder. Weird.

There is absolutely no problem traveling through NJ if done correctly-. Handguns in a lockbox, ammo separated, Long guns in cases, ammo separate. Lived here my whole life. Never a problem.

Trekking poles i don't suppose they are illegal?
I take one with me wherever I go handy for trekking in town or country.
Filling the top end with molten lead makes them very handy indeed also the rubber end tip can be removed and interesting modifications can be made . Spare rubber ends can be bought in quantity from ebay.
Perfectly camouflaged self defence and I do not know of any law that prohibits them.

A standard crook ended walking cane can be modified by making a sharp point on the crook by cutting a 45° angle on it. Add a 3 or 4 inch piece of stainless steel pipe to the bottom end and pin it in place and you have a devastating thumper.
Chain Gang Walking Bosses used to carry canes like that but now it would be a civil rights violation.
