Some of y'all have some crazy State rules. The 4473 is free here as mentioned and I think transfers are up to the FFL. I have never heard of an FFL charging anything if the customer is buying from him, only if he gets the paperwork only. I am unaware because ...

All of the above discussion is why I buy at Local Businesses.

There is no reason that it is so important that I need to by a Gun online.

I'll take it a step further. There is no reason for me to buy a gun from a dealer or store. That's why I have no idea what the fees are other than what I read.

In Virginia it's $2 background check and my gunsmith never charged me anything for transfer.

When I held an FFL, I sold lots of used guns. Customer would tell me what they wanted, how soon they wanted, and what they would pay for XX condition. Then I would search GunList, GB, and couple other sources. Of course these weren't charged a transfer fee. If the customer found what he was looking for himself, I'd handle the transfer for $10-20 depending on who the customer was(friend or ???).
The local FFL I currently use charges $20 per 4473 call in.

When I had my FFL I charges $20 and regular customers less. When a couple of people ordered high end guns online for $30 or $40 less than I wanted and stopped in for a copy of my FFL I told them I only charge 10% over my cost for special order guns because I don't have money invested in inventory. So I told them the transfer fee would be 10% of wholesale cost and they would save the sales tax. When they went to another shop in the area and told them what I was doing they changed their policy to mirror mine.

In Maryland you have to get approval to purchase a handgun. It is basically a State Police generated 4473. Once approved you can then purchase the handgun ... and pay $10.00 for their 'hard work'. Then you purchase the handgun, fill out the 4473 then wait seven days for approval to actually take possession.

Makes me glad that I no longer live in Maryland. I was there for the creation of the "handgun roster" and had a gun put on the roster. Things weren't very bad when I left the state but all sorts of restrictions hit shortly after my departure.

The 4473 is free here too, however, the State Police have an online form that must be completed in order to be allowed to purchase. It is similar to the 4473 which is why I said "State Police generated 4473.....". They assign a PIN with the authorization to purchase letter and that is good for ONE time only.

When the surplus P38s came into the county a few years back, I called my favorite local shop and asked, "Do you have any of the surplus P38s that were just imported?" The guy had no idea what a P38 was.

Most of the local shops are staffed by young guys who know about plastic fantastic and little else.

I'm a 07/03 FFL holder in Southeast Iowa. I charge $20 for a transfer with a NICS check, $10 for a transfer with a CWP and $10 for Veterans/Police. Additional guns on the same form are $10ea and free for Veterans/Police. Never understand charging a bunch of money for 3 minutes of paperwork.

Out of the loop a bit and the shop I used to use doesn't have a FFL any longer. But way back it was 10 bucks a sheet. Meaning up to five on one sheet for the ten bucks. The third year she raised it to 20 bucks.

Being an FFL in WNC, I charge $30 which breaks down to $28.10 for my troubles and $1.90 sales tax.
Some folks think they can beat my selling price on a new gun by going online and buy the same thing and save money.
That equates to their online price, plus shipping, plus sales tax (GB collects 7%) plus my $30 transfer fee. Are they saving money? Maybe, maybe not.

The $30 is about my profit on a firearm I sell. Now since NC now collects sales tax on "labor" (the transaction) I loose $1.90 of my profit. I been charging $30 since I started the business in 2005. If I sell a firearm from my inventory, no transaction fee is charged, just my County Sales Tax rate of 6.75%.

My guy here in Illinois charges $20 for a firearm transfer. He drives 44-miles round-trip to meet me at a McDonald's one-mile from my house where we do the paperwork inside and discretely transfer the firearm in the parking lot. Not only is that great service, the bonus is I usually eat half of his French fries.

Not to rock the boat, transferring a firearm is against BATF regulations outside of the business address listed on the license except in the case of a "registered" "gun show". I do transfers at Friends of NRA Banquets because they are "registered" "gun shows".

I just bought a Super Wrangler on GunBroker. I'll be looking for wooden grips for it and the Chiapet (Chiappa SAA clone mentioned earlier) may be looking for a new home. However, that's not the subject here.

The guy I use only charges $25 for a transfer and that includes the PICS (Pa. Instant Check System) check, the state charges $2 for a check. I view that as very reasonable. Thirty years ago, I charged $20 and no one complained.

I am a member at a range. They charge $75 to receive a firearm because they don't want that business. People still pay for it. The also charge $75 to clean a handgun. They don't do outgoing firearm transfers. (Members do get 1 free, incoming transfer a month, though.)
Some places don't care the extra hassle of transfers.
