I used to work with three brothers, they were of Italian descent, and from one of the most delightful families I've ever known. Their father had once been a Shelby County deputy sheriff. From his lawman days he had a double barreled shotgun, cut down and stocked as a pistol. this from "back in the days."
These pistols were issued to deputy sheriffs for the destruction of moonshine stills. When a still was discovered, the deputy would blast away at the cooker and thumper with #00 buckshot. This supposedly disabling the operation.
However, the amount of 12 ga. ammunition used began to reach very expensive proportions. Seems every discarded wash tub or 55 gallon drum received more than its share of buckshot. The practice was soon abandoned.
