NEED HELP

I purchased a Ruger three screw in .44 from a friend for $600. He said he was giving me a great deal. I am not sure.

Can someone help me with the value of this gun?

Ruger Super Black Hawk
.44 Magnum
Serial 6310
Barrel Length: 6-15/16" thru the frame
6-1/4" end of barrel to front of frame

It has had the conversion done by Ruger, i have the old parts in a bag from ruger.
It has been Re-blued by Ruger.
I have the packing slip from Ruger showing the above work being done.

IT WAS 6 1/2" GUN, same as yours, Sir. Those are by far the most common in that Ruger 44MAG model.
OH BY MY BAD, I JUST SAW[GEESH] yours is a SUPER BLACKHAWK !!! THat makes all the difference in the world. Mine was the 6 1/2" 44MAG BLACKHAWK. The clinker now is finding out how much value your very rare 44MAG pistol lost from being re-finished. And I do not know. Someone here does though, that's a fact !!

First off, welcome to the forum.
Now about the gun. Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk?
Barrel lengths are measured from the beginning of the barrel to the muzzle. Can't relate to your measurements
So yours should be either 6 1/2" rare for Super or 7 1/2" rare for Blackhawk.
$600 price depends on the answers to above

I am very pleased to be part of this forum, Ruger has been my gun of choice from child hood on.

The gun is certainly a Super Blackhawk. Which is why, I am confused about the measurements as well.

Measuring from the front of the cylinder (where the barrel comes thru the frame), to the end of the barrel, I get 6-15/16"

Measuring from the end of the barrel to the front of the frame i get 6-3/16, (I stated 6-1/4" in error earlier).

So I am lost, I would like to think I have a 6-1/2" gun, for the value but I cannot come to a definitive answer.

Maybe this is a one off valued in the millions?

Sounds like it was cut down. Why 1/2" don't have a clue. Could have had some pits at the tip of the barrel and was reblued as you stated.
If it was a 6 1/2" it would measure close to that from the face of the cylinder.

But when i called in to Ruger and ask about the gun, they said nothing was on file about it.


Assuming the barrel was cut down, What do you think the value is? How do I post a picture?

As a shooter, it is a nice vintage which may have some very desirable features such as high polish finish and a steel ejector rod housing. As a collector piece the modifications of course drop the value. However most die hard collectors want a basically new gun in the box so that eliminates the majority of guns of that vintage anyways. A nice unmodified version can sell from $450.00 to as high as over $1000.00 at times. Current market conditions seem to be trending down unless of course it meets all the usual collector standards. If I didnt already have one just like it I wouldnt hesitate to pay 400-450ish as a shooter and or basis for a custom gun. I am definately not an expert so just my opinions.

Well If you are happy with it that is what it is worth. Super 3 screws are very nice guns. Look at what a new one cost new. The 3 screw is still and will always be a better gun IMHO.
Yea it ain't no collectible so just have fun with it.
By the way most run of the mill Supers are not that collectable. I have bought and sold a few of them. Like boxed non fired 80 prefix for $550 and all steel boxed 95% for $650.
$100 here or there don't mean crap in the long run :wink:

Without "provenance" stating the barrel was shortened at the Factory you have an interesting shooter.

This one has "Factory Provenance" and an interesting story to add to its' history.

Thanks to all! I originally bought this gun to accompany me in the woods hunting. I became concerned about damaging it and have considered selling/trading it for a newer model. I would be less concerned about scratching a newer model than a nice three screw. But now having heard everyones opinions here, i am less concerned about putting a scratch on it. It is a great shooter and I will continue to do just that.

All of that being said, does anyone know what year or serial number range the 6-1/2" guns were released?

The RENE guide shows a serial no range of 24324 - 27164 which would put it in 1966 -1967, IF I'm reading it correct.

Fred, bought a almost new SBH UNCONVERTED for under$400. ser#4120. no box. 2 boxes of norma sjfps had several shot only. Was told to keep it as a collectors early sbh. bugger that,i might solve the great mystery tomorrow so, i shoot it several times a week and enjoy it. worried about what you paid?? as was posted above $100 don't mean squat. its a early RUGER shoot and enjoy a great revolver.
