Fellers stay with me here. After years of searching I finally found some suspenders that did not fall off my shoulders or came loose from my pants, I love em.
I wear them under a untucked shirt, hate tucked shirts.

Well several folks have seen me, women folk mostly, wearing the tee shirt with them suspenders. I have not gained a pound but they (90%) ask if I have put on weight. Got to take that flannel shirt off when your hot ya know.

Them suspenders make your belly look a lot bigger than it is!!!!!
I got me some pictures from when I was 2 years old and I always had a pot belly. No one ever said anything until I started wearing these suspenders.

I'm gonna keep wearing them cause my narrow behind cannot keep my britches up!
Oh yea, suspenders make men folk look fat....... so I'm told.

If any of youns are wondering about them suspenders, I got them from Sportsman's Guide. I think Dutch mil surplus 10 pair for $13. You will be happy with them. I can reach down, climb up and bend over without failure. They slide on your belt loops for retention as opposed to clamp on. I have pert near had an eye put out by tiger teeth clamp on suspenders.

In you want to look good for the women folk, don't wear you suspenders where they can be seen cause yous looks FAT.
enjoy

I got a paralyzed diaphragm on one side (one lung frozen) and I'm heavy...I found if I ate a bit too much my belt would push up under the diaphragm and really cause breathing problems and pain...doc said get suspenders which I did..I wear them under my shirts or over depending on the shirt and at 79 don't much care what folks think about my style...at least I'm mostly comfortable these days...

I quit wearing a belt just about a year ago. I have a crushed vertebra and it pushes against my sciatic nerve causing my left leg to 'burn'. I gained a few pounds around the middle (went from a 34 to a 36 waist pants) and the belt was pressing against that nerve on my left hip. I was in agony much of the time. Went to suspenders and haven't had a problem since.

I found a pair in a gunshop some years ago that had pins that went through the pants in addition to the clamps. They would hold up and not damage the pants. they were Hunter Orange, and I used them mostly on my hunting clothes.

I noticed that as I got older my backside slimmed down some. My wife said it just migrated to the front and up a bit...

There's a lot of that going around.... might even say it's an epidemic.

On the subject of suspenders.... all my hunting pants (the brush pants and the wool Malones) have buttons inside the waistband for use with REAL suspenders. None of that clip-on stuff.

I started wearing suspenders about 27 years ago. I wore color coded ones to match my uniform shirts. Packing a heavy gun belt I was having to cinch up tight. My lady friend at the time ran a men`s Big and Tall store and kept me well supplied. However the ones she carried with the metal clips tore up my truck seat. After she died I started wearing Perry suspenders with the plastic clips. They don't tear furniture up.

I am fat. Never tuck in a shirt as it makes me look fatter and I get hot.

Those real button suspenders are something I need to investigate. I never had much backside to hold up pants. That has gotten worst. I think a light suspender under my shirts might be the answer.

Clip suspenders never hold. Or just tear the car seats.

You gotta think this out. I am very experienced at it. If you where suspenders UNDER your shirt you need to plan lead time when you are taking fast short quick steps to the facility. I wear mine over the shirt. Now that will also change your mode of concealed carry if you do that.

You don't want the buttons on the inside. They poke you. Conversely buttons sticking out on the outside the back of your pants will tear up upholstery. Truck and recliner.
This is why I use the Perry's. One thing though with the Perry clips. The openings that hook on the bottom of the belts aren't wide enough to clip on to super thick gun belts. But that's what those belt keepers are for. I haven't tried this rig but it`s calling me. I wish I had one my working years. Looks ideal to me for a uniform rig or anyone that wears a gun belt, especially us normal guys with a 48" waste.

Yup, age tends to be cruel to us. I started wearing the Perry brand suspenders with plastic belt keepers after not being able to find a clip-style that wouldn't slip off my pants (also, being 6'4" tends to stretch out regular size suspenders to the point of clasp failure). I ran across an old gentleman wearing what he referred to as horse bridal suspenders that had trigger snap hooks which attached to the belt loops & could be worn with or without a belt. epay has an example http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=leather+galluses and the suspender store has a good selection too http://www.suspenderstore.com/trigger-snap-suspenders.html So far these have been failure-proof & they kind of look classier than plain elastic.

I also own a pair of those fancy leather suspenders by Nocowa. I bought the real long ones that are actually too long for me. I have been thinking of taking them to a shoe repair or saddle shop and get them altered. Just haven't got to it.

This is a fun & interesting thread.
I don't wear suspenders as a general rule. But I do have a set for my SASS outfit, and understand the issues mentioned above. It's interesting to see the options & why's & why not's to certain types etc.

As for looking fat while wearing them,,, it's an optical thing. However, most men are not as fashion conscious, or just don't understand the projection of appearances by clothing & how it's worn. Miss Penny & I often discuss how she looks & all when she's dressing, and I've told her since early on, I can not look at a piece of clothing on a hanger & tell her if it'll look good or not when she wears it. But MOST men can look at a lady, as she's dressed for going out, and tell if she looks good or not. Or if she looks fatter or not, or whatever. We can't often say WHY she looks fatter or sexier or whatever,, we just know what looks good or not.
Unfortunately, we men often fail to grasp the fashion statements that so many women fuss over. Look at the other post about socks,,, & you will see what I mean. And add in many comments above, & there is evidence of the same attitude.

Now, my Dad actually had a "Dance & Charm" school prior to WWII. So, growing up, we kids were taught a lot about how to act in public, and how to be properly dressed.
Number one rule,,, be neat in your appearance. You may not have fine clothes, but what you have can be clean & neat. Comb your hair, (beards too,) wash your hands & face, tie your shoes, button all buttons, (one semi acceptable exception was a shirt with a neck button that could allow a tie, we could leave that button undone if no tie was worn,) tuck in your shirttails, and try & match up what you wear. Socks were usually only found in a few colors, white, black, brown, or dark blue. Match them to your pants colors. Suspenders were used on dress pants under a sport coat. A tie was worn when wearing a suit.

As he aged, and watched fashion & apparel change, my Dad would grumble a bit about the sloppy dressing habits he saw. But, even when clothing wasn't right,,, as long as the person was clean & neat,, he allowed them a bit of leeway.

So, as I raised my sons, I tried to instill in them a sense of neatness & such in dress. However, both of them like to wear stuff where the shirt is not tucked in. The oldest,,, has a fair sense of fashion, especially modern fashion, and he dresses appropriate for his age bracket AND the times. He does like to make a bold statement sometimes,,, but in general,,, no real issues with his manner of dress. He wears suspenders from time to time,,, as a fashion thing,,, because his skinny but6t doesn't need them.
My youngest,,, as a cop,,, wears his clothing a bit looser & all as he's always carrying a gun. His excuse for not tucking a shirttail, his gun & CCW. Yet, when he wears a suit,,, it's "right." He's never worn suspenders to my knowledge.

But suspenders will often give the look of accentuating our middle aged bellies to where we look "fatter" than we may be.

It's just that some of us,,, really don't care that much.
