CaryC has been taken to task lately about his "pet peeves." I tend to agree with him on such mutilation of the English language.

I'm reminded of the time I had to review the drawings of two young engineers. I pointed out that they had depicted and item in the reverse image from normal.

One objected, "What's the difference?"

"Because this is the right way to do it," I explained.

The second studied me a moment, then said, "Reason enough."

I will sometimes correct poor grammar, and people will sometimes tell me, 'Well, you knew what I meant, didn't you?"

I always tell them, "No, I GUESSED what you meant, and I could have just as easily guessed wrong. If you want me to KNOW what you mean, use correct grammar."

My wife who is much much smarter than I am, didn't grow up speaking English. I learned a long time ago to stop correcting her. Over the years she has come up with some good words such as "Traffic-ly" for rush hour traffic jams. Or "wall in the hole" vs "hole in the wall" for those special greasy spoons I like to eat at.

That's what's called a "typo". Not the same in any regard as not knowing the difference between there and they're...

Nothing is worse than when there and their and they're are mis-used. That's my little pet peeve. It interrupts the flow when I'm reading and have to stop and think about what they meant to write.
