I received my notice to re-register my truck in the mail. With the form was a notice for EV owners. My truck is a '92 GMC - not electric. However, if I WAS an owner, I would have been informed of the ELECTRIC VEHICLE FEE. This fee is IN ADDITION to the normal registration fee. The amount of the fee? $250.oo annually, rising $10 per year for 4 years after. It cost me $68 to renew my truck. Had it been electric it would have been $318.oo !!! Must be paid in full at time of registration.
It is supposed to be added to the "Transportation Trust Fund" (Of which I have never heard) "to ensure that all automobiles, including ZEVs contribute to funding state road maintenance." If this is true then why only EVs? (not that I am complaining). The whole thing doesn't make sense. Can anyone explain it like I'm 5?

Let's see...Tax break for buying an EV everybody cheers were selling more EVs, Uh where did the gas tax revenue go? Who do we tag to make it up. You subsidize the tax break for the EVS with your tax dollars and then you pay again for the tax money lost.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
Now to fire people up more let’s register bikes and charge them for road use. Not that the break down the road way but some one is paying for all the bike lane etc

Pluse it would be fun to hear them complain.

Big problem now is the electric bikes. Some are as fast as motorcycles but aren’t registered or insured.

I think most municipalities have a limit to size of the motor but no enforcement. If you ever get into an accident with one take pictures especially of data plates. It might be illegal.

Wait! Aren't EVs supposed to save the planet. Be the best thing on the road. Funny to listen to those thinking EV are the bomb. I will admit they do have a place. I do not have problem with EVs. The problem is environment lies behind them.

Here's what they did in my state of Tennessee...
In 2026, Tennessee charges an additional $200 annual registration fee for all-electric vehicles (EVs) to compensate for lost gas tax revenue. This fee applies to renewals, is in addition to standard registration costs, and is scheduled to increase to $274 for renewals on or after January 1, 2027.
Key Details on Tennessee EV Fees (2026):
  • Amount: $200 annually for fully electric vehicles (through Dec. 31, 2026).
  • Upcoming Increase: On January 1, 2027, the fee increases to $274.
  • Hybrids/Plug-in Hybrids: These vehicles are subject to a $100 annual fee.
  • Application: These fees are added to the standard registration renewal fees.
  • Future Costs: Starting in 2028, the $274 fee will be adjusted annually for inflation.
These fees are part of the Transportation Modernization Act of 2023, designed to ensure that owners of non-gas-powered vehicles contribute to the funding of state road and bridge projects.

Now, you want to hear a good one...from California of course...They are proposing a mileage tax to make up for lost gas tax revenue from EVs. (You may have seen this on another thread posted here recently). So, they will somehow track your mileage and charge you from 6 to 9 cents a mile for every mile you drive. HOWEVER...being it's Commiefornia, as this evolved, it is now set to go into effect for ALL VEHICLES, EV, gas, and diesel. And the gas and diesel vehicles will still pay the gas tax, so they will, in effect, be double-taxed.

I don't think most people would have a problem with EVs. Drive what you like. I think the pushback on EVs stems from real and proposed government mandates that aim to ban gas and diesel vehicles. I mean, I don't have a problem with anyone having an EV if that's what they want, and its limitations work for them. The problem I have is the government trying to force them on everybody.

Please share the actual law in CA you described.

New law here. All electric bikes now have to be registered and insured. The last free vehicle is gone.

I say good for that. Some parents here in the neighborhood have bought their less than 16 year old boy an electric motorcycle. As in… NOT A BIKE whatsoever. He rides it on a very busy street. No it does not have pedals as far as I could see…

What sort of “free vehicle” are you thinking of?

What about pedal bikes?
They should be. There is a thing that fraudsters do. I know because it happened to me. A bicyclist ran into the right front of my truck, very near the front. I was stopped waiting for traffic to clear. He hit the truck and fell down. Paramedics came, he went to the ER, all the tests showed literally no injury.

Next day his lawyer contacted my insurance claiming life threatening and altering injuries. Long story short, my insurance settled (now you know why your insurance is so high). This even though the impact marks on the truck, and multiple eye witnesses stated he hit me while riding his bicycle on the side walk, not the street.

So what is the thing that fraudsters do? They look for vehicles that have company logos on the door. Because they know they have very high dollar insurance limits. And yes, we removed all of the company info from our vehicles.

This did cause a problem because some companies required your business name, contractor license and so forth on your vehicle. A simple magnetic sign took care of that.

Oh, by the way, my insurance found that the individual had seven previous bicycle versus pickup (not just vehicle, but pickups specifically) claims. All against company owned vehicles. Why did they settle? Because they knew the odds of winning in court were miniscule. Jurors always seem to be sympathetic toward "injured" bicyclists and pedestrians.

It, as of right now, hasn't passed the legislature as far as I know. Also, the current bill is to "study" it. As I said, they are proposing this. But I have no doubt that it will pass this "study" bill and, soon after, the actual mileage tax... AB 1421

Set to go into effect .....is the phrase that prompted my question.

The part where I typed... "...it is now set to go into effect for ALL VEHICLES..."...maybe was misleading. Perhaps I could have worded that better, however, what I meant is that when it is passed, the current proposal that's been bouncing around is saying it will be for ALL vehicles, EV, hybrid, gas, or diesel. The original proposal was to replace the gas tax with every vehicle paying a mileage tax. Now the scuttlebutt says they'll keep the gas tax anyway. Hence, the double taxation of the gas and diesel vehicles.

If....it passes.

With that I'm done.

Have a good weekend

By vehicle I meant for low income adults, or those who simply don't need a car to commute. They live close to work and don'rt want to spend for a car, gas, maintenance, insurance, etc. They would use mopeds or electric bikes. Keep in mind that I am speaking of suburban lanes and streets, not city traffic. Still affordable compared to cars, but once our privatized DMV gets involved problems arise.

One note: Mopeds were and are the superior choice due to the safety hazards caused by E-bike owners. That's OWNERS. The lithium batteries are known dangers, yet owners don't respect. They leave them charging overnight unattended, store them in all the wrong ways. Garage fires have spiked - alot.
