For those not in the know this in reference to the post I made about falling last Monday and 'twisting' my ankle...
My neighbor doctor got upset with me last night when she found out it had not gotten better and I had not gone and gotten an x-ray....
So, all you folks harping at me to do it were right... the reality is I was just putting it off hoping that it would get better but the realty was I think it was actually getting worse.
Went to the urgent care place today... was a pain sitting and waiting for an hour... but the folks were nice and good... then finally got the x-ray and then the doctor spends a minute or so explaining what this showed... don't have a clue what she said other than my ankle is broken and I need to see a specialist... in the mean time I've got one of those big plastic/velcroed inflatable boots I'm supposed to wear and some serious pain meds... max 3 a day. Some stuff called Tramadol...... can't drive or even drink alcohol while taking this stuff... they did not say anything about cigars though.... I took one about 45 minutes ago and can tell you right now... the pain is gone.... ..but I actually think it lets me type better... go figure.

tramadol gave me hives. watch for it.
im pretty sure they told me every 8 hours too. if thats what you got....dont go any sooner. itll make you sick. youll be tempted as it wears off at around 7 hrs.
when they say 8hrs, thats at night too.
i took it 10pm/6am/2pm/10pm.......
how many mg do you have?

50mg and I'm feeling pretty loopy.... I was not in a lot of pain before it was just uncomfortable a bit.... probably on a scale of 1-10 just a 2 unless I moved my foot wrong.... then it could get up to an 8.... having real trouble typing .... think I'll go lay down with our little fox hound Tally Ho

Oh, Jeepnik... go ahead and say it just don't make it political....

I have one of those boots. It's a big help. I'm glad you got it looked at and I'm not even going to mess with you except for no dancing on the roof!

First, of course, get to healing! You are lucky they gave you Tramadol. Doctors a afraid to give out pain killers these days. Tramadol worked great for me in a similar situation, and didn't mess me up like other stuff.

Okay, told you so! :devilish:

By the way Tramadol is good stuff. Used it a few times.

At least now you know what it is instead of guessing. Too bad it’s broken though. How long will that take to heal? 8 weeks or so? Yuck. In summer time too.

When my daughter tore her ACL I was surprised at how much pain med they were willing to prescribe. She was told, "If you run out, call." My last experience with pain meds was, "Here's two, try to make them last."

A long time ago one of those docs in a box locations told me I had broken my ankle, showed me the X-Ray and the break. ( I had rolled my ankle twice in a month and it was real painful the second time )
X rays at the orthopedic were negative for a fracture, it did show bone spurs.

My GP told me years ago that all X-rays are required to be looked at by a radiologist. This is why. The generalist can miss things.

They always say an ankle break heals quicker than a bad sprain. 🤷‍♂️

That has not been my experience.

I've never heard "quicker healing" but I was told by my podiatrist that a break heals better. He explained that a sprain is stretched ligaments and they never fully recover but a break becomes solid bone again.

I've broken a number of bones and those healed breaks don't cause any problems. I had the worst possible sprain of my right ankle and, twenty two years later, it still reminds me of the incident, especially when I'm tired.

Back in 2019 when I fell of a roof the Orthopedist showed me the xray of my spine and pointed to the two vertebrae he said were broken and I could not see even the tiniest crack... I even had a copy of it for a while... but I will tell you there was no doubt I was hurt... took close to a month to be able to even go out and walk around for more than 5 or 10 minutes.

Good luck with the orthopedic doctor Blume. I'm glad you finally got it looked at further. The week of procrastination might have caused more problems. Hopefully not

Not what I was hoping for from the Ortho Doc... going under the knife next week (that's the soonest the can get to me) and it looks like probably two months before I will be able to walk with out some assistance. The big deal is not the broken tibia but the gap in the joint... I think I tore something loose that caused this... medically it is all kind of above me... but that gap if not pulled back together will calcify and cause real trouble down the road. They did more x-rays yesterday and the telling one was what they called.Gravity Stress where I hung my foot off he table and let it kind of just dangle there and they took a picture of it. Here it is and High lighted the important parts:

If tramadol works for you great. I spent 14 years as an orthopedic nurse and most all felt tramadol was a waste of time and good money. Tylenol did better for most folks. When the Ortho Doc said we were switching to tylenol every 6 hours and backing it up with oxycodone for breakthrough pain, I thought he was nuts. But it worked well. Most patients told me that the pain was much better controlled post op than it was preop. Tramadol just makes me jittery with no pain relief...........so down the crapper it went.

I also delay seeing a doctor for twisted ankle, hip, wrist, and knee issues. It's a fine line to know when it's time to get help or stay the course to let nature work it out.

Best of luck.

Earlier this year late on a Friday afternoon my brother’s 87 year old wife fell on her rear in their house, causing her a lot of pain.
Brother (who has a bad case of scoliosis) helped her get settled in her easy chair. He thought it was getting too late to take her out for an X-ray at an ER, and didn’t want to call 911.

He delayed calling anyone until Saturday (after she had a very uncomfortable night) - and then it was just their DIL nurse who, after he described the situation, said to give her Tylenol.
His wife seemed to settle down after awhile, but was still uncomfortable and didn’t sleep well Saturday & Sunday nights.

He finally called their GP Monday morning - the GP said to call 911 right then and have her transported to the ER.
Brother instead called their son who came over and took her to the ER for X-Rays, which showed she had broken her hip!
As a result, after her surgery to repair it, she spent 4 weeks in an orthopedic rehabilitation facility to slowly recuperate.

After being discharged six weeks ago she’s been continuing to recuperate with the help of daily home healthcaregivers and therapists.
All their immediate family are still upset with my brother for dithering around with his lack of action that first weekend.
In fact my nephew said he’d love to “punch his dad in the face” for his stupid hesitation after she fell.

Of course we all think her recovery would’ve been much quicker if she had gotten immediate treatment in the first place, and her suffering a lot less. Brother still thinks he did nothing wrong.
The rest of us are just shaking our heads.
