The Last Slave Ship Found. . .

The Clotilda, the last American slave ship, used to smuggle the final 110 slaves brought in bondage from Africa to the United States landed in Mobile Alabama around 1860. Timothy Meaher, the owner made a bet that he could smuggle slaves to the US. At the time it was illegal to do so. William Foster, the captain of the Clotilda described how he acquired the slaves in his journal, which in part, is in the link below. Immediately after the "cargo" was unloaded the Clotilda was taken to a place in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and set on fire to hide the evidence.

As a side note, I served in the USCGR with Meaher's great grandson who is a very large land owner in the area.

Very interesting article. With that slant, it won't be picked up by the MSM.

As for burning the ship---perhaps the owner didn't realize what a horrible stench would permeate it after hauling slaves, so that it couldn't be used for anything else.
