If you live or visit any city of any size at all I'm sure you've seen them. "Will work for food". "Homeless Vet needs help". "single mother, anything helps". Etc., etc. Have you ever seen a unique one that made you think "that guy deserves a buck for creativity if nothing else".

I saw one the other day that, had I been in the correct lane, I think I would have given the guy a greenback. It said, "Too ugly to be a model".

What clever, unique, honest or whatever cardboard signs have you seen?

My question is...Why, with a gas service island full of cars fueling up, the girl that need gas to get to the hospital to see her dying mother picks ME!

The funnier thing is in the last month, same girl has approached me three times....(sure hope her mother gets better)

"I need money for BEER"

At least he was honest. :D

Hi,

We had a guy locally whose sign said "Why lie? I need a beer!"

It's a long story, but that sign put two girls thru college and they came out debt free... even AFTER Dad paid taxes on his "earnings." :D

True story. A friend of mine, who was my senior Platoon Sergeant many years ago, was heading home and passed a young lady with a sign that simply said "Hungry". He told me that he drove past her then thought about her situation and turned around and stopped by her, reached in the back if his van and handed her a large can of pork and beans. He said he was almost home when he realized that he had given her food but no way to open it.

A few years back there was this woman with the sign, three kids, husband left, no job need food. She was extremely attractive, great shape and wore one of the skimpiest bikinis I ever saw. She complained the got a lot of unwelcome proposals and very little money. She also complained about how the cops kept hassling her. I wonder why? I did kind of miss the scenery after she quit panhandling. Turned out she had job skills and someone gave her a job.

I drive a delivery route and when panhandlers ask for money I give them a door tag and them we always need help and to call or just show up and ask for the Boss. After about 30 slips and not one call or show up I just tell them to get the heck away for the van!

I was in drive thru at McDs. Guy in front of me got his food and stopped by the homeless begger at the exit and handed him a burger and soda. As soon as the guy was gone the homeless begger dumped the stuff in the trash and went about his task of gathering real money. Santa Monica went so far as to print cards for people to hand the homeless with where to get a free meal and bed. The banks were complaining that some of the homeless were exchanging upwards of $700 a day in small bills for 50s and 100s.

Nita and I were enjoying a meal at a hamburger place, Backyard Burger, when a man came in with his story about looking for a job, being up from Mississippi, broke and hungry. "Any way you can help...." was his approach.

"I'll buy you lunch," was my response. He agreed, I bought him a burger, fries and a drink. He sat next to us, gave us a good testimony and thanked me profusely.

I felt good the rest of the day.

I will not, and advise Nita the same, take out my billfold in front of such a person, nor give cash. TV reporters here in Memphis have observed "beggars" leaving their posts at the end of the day. They were often picked up by wives or friends who were driving very nice autos or SUVs.

Every story is special. In 1963 a man, about 40 something at that time, walked into our Sheriff's Office where I was Undersheriff. He told me that he had just arrived in town from Missouri, he and his wife were on their way to California, his car had "broke down" and he was short of money to get it fixed. He asked me if I knew of anyone who would hire him to work, at least to earn enough money to get to California.

It happened only a few days after I had decided to hire another man to work on my ranch where I lived at that time. I visited with the man from Missouri for a little while before offering him a job on my ranch.

That man and his wife worked for me and lived on my ranch until 1998 when they retired and moved back to Missouri.

My dad and I were hit on by a bum in a town in Canada. My dad told him he was looking for the same thing himself. We walked off about 15 yards farther and he yelled out, well I hope ya find it. Ya both are fat enough now! A little later we again met him on another crowded street and he muttered to dad, I aint talking to you anymore!
A few years ago a black lady hit me up for gas money so she could go pick up her chillen at school. I gave her a few bucks. My buddy stood waiting for me watching at the door to the restaurant where we were meeting for our usual coffee and asked why I gave her money. I told him and he broke up laughing and said, you dang fool, there isn't any school today. This is Memorial day!
Last year the wife and I were driving in a small town near us. We spotted a old guy walking with three dogs. He was in obviously bad shape with knee braces and could barely walk, dressed dirty. She had me pull over to see if he needed help. He wasn't trying to stop us. Yeah he could use a ride to his "place". He started to cry. Turned out he lived about seven miles away up a dirt road that was almost a trail. He was living in a abandoned trailer with no electricity or even running water! As slow as he was walking I don't see how he could have even made it at all by night.
A few days later the wife packed up a half a pickup load of grocery's and other stuff and we drove over. He wasn't there so we just left it. I then spotted a couple guys deer hunting near by and one was a local rancher that knew him. He said he occasionally would drive him to town too. We haven't seen him since. The nearest house to his "set up" is about three miles.
I have been unpredictable about giving money to bums. Sometimes I do but usually I don't. When I was single I helped out a woman. I inherited her for about three years and ended up with her death of cancer. Long story.

Saw one begging today; A muslim female on a corner with a sign about "3 kids, no papers, etc etc" half of it in arabic and was just a block down the road form a Mosque. I gave it nothing and didn't see ANYBODY stop. If you aint got the papers, then GO BACK to your (Trump word for such countries) and stay there because we don't NEED you and your herd here.

Out collecting for ISIS.

There was a joke floating around here awhile back about beggar making thousands a day with a sign that said "Only need $20 more dollars for bus fair back to Mexico".

REAL homeless people will have dirty shoes and the bottoms of their pant legs will be dirty, too...dead giveaway when I see a faker with clean shoes/clothes.

Just yesterday saw one that read " I am a BUM and like COLD BEER - thanks, Frank".
I was tempted to give him a buck but decided against it.

I was queried by a rough looking guy at a gas station in TN. He was holding a rather large wrench and asked if I would like to buy it for $10. It was probably worth that but not knowing if it was stolen , etc., I declined. Then I asked him what the money was for as this was about 11am. I then offered to buy him something to eat. He confessed that what he really needed was something to drink. I was not surprised and gave him the $10 bill but I added a kicker. I asked him if he would like to be free of the need to drink. I then gave him a Gideon New Testament and showed him the helps in the front for addiction, etc. He thanked me and said he would read it. I don’t know what became of that fellow but I told him I would pray for him.

Thanks,

Creative signs can reap better rewards than the standard begging ones.

In general,, we, as Americans want to help those truly in need. And yet,,, we also hate getting lied to or scammed. Honesty, willingness to work, truly needy etc,,, will appreciate anything offered.

However,,, there are a lot more scammers than there are folks in need who actually are willing to get on a street corner to beg. A scammer often has transportation nearby. I always ask myself; "How did that person get to that corner? Where do they live?"
If you frequent an area in a town,, you will soon get to know the truly needy,, vs the scammers.
Locally, in a nearby town,, we have a man who has limited mental capabilities,, to where a job that requires skill is beyond his abilities. Yet, this man,, works and works hard. He's a sign holder for businesses,,, waving to folks, smiling & HAPPY in his life. Local businesses hire him as he's dependable & honest. In fact, he uses a moped to get from home to work & back again. He's so well known that local community folks got together & bought him the moped after his previous one died & wasn't easily repaired. He cried often for over a week due to the kindness. And this gentleman,,, shops at wally world,, and I've seen him coming & going there several times. Whenever a donation pot is out, such as for Lions, or Salvation Army etc,, he has NEVER passed by, going in or out, without making a donation too. Always smiling & happy, and giving. He's known, and taken care of because folks know he's worthy of the help.
There is also a woman in the same general area. Walks everywhere. We see her all over an area about 3 miles radius. Never begging. Yet,,, I've seen local stop & give her cash,,, as it's obvious she's in a bit of a need. And she's not into booze etc as best any of us can tell.
So, we do have a generous heart,,, when a true need is found.

Personal stories. My Dad grew up during the Depression. Hard living for him. Well, after he became successful,, we'd often have folks stop in our restaurant,,, and ask for a meal. Dad allowed he'd feed them,,, and would ask if they were willing to work for the meal. If they were,,, he always had stuff that needed doing. He'd hire them. If they worked hard,,, not only did they get a meal,,, they'd get some cash to go along with it. Slackers & lazy types,,, got a meal,,, but little more.
I occasionally see someone obviously in need. When I can feel as if it'll actually help,,, I help. Once,, I saw an older woman,,, obviously a person in need,, counting her coins, in a McDonalds, to see what she could buy. She got a small coffee. As she got it,,, I stepped up & offered to buy a meal, she turned a bit red,,, but mumbled a "thanks" and then ordered a biscuit with bacon & egg. I said to give her two of them. Her smile was worth every penny.
I also saw another older woman once in another fast food place,,, who got a cup of water, as she didn't have any money. I gave her some & said to have lunch on me. As I left,, she was ordering food.

You can help,,, if you study who you are giving to. But street corner beggars,,, ESPECIALLY younger ones who appear to be in good health (meaning they can work,) don't get a dime from me.

In Phoenix, a news reporter was asking a couple how much money they got in a day. The woman said about 300 dollars. The man tried to shut her up and played down how much they got. I don't give "pros" a dime. Like the ones with a puppy on a string to sucker pet lovers. greg

I run distance and my long run routes vary some.
Two seasons ago on a Sunday morning 20 miler it
was pouring rain and about 40 degrees out. Was dressed
in black Gore Running rain gear that cost a ridiculous amount of
money but looks pretty crappy. Had my hood down standing
waiting to cross a busy expressway exit ramp when a car
full of older people pulled up looking like they were dressed
for church. The lady driving rolled her window down and called me
over.....tried to give me twenty dollars!
I didn't think I looked that bad, my wife thought it was
pretty funny.

I was in Mexicali in 1964 and a American asked me for help. He could have doubled for William Holden. He was wearing ill fitting black and white checked cook`s pants, was barefoot and had a bloody bandage around his head. His story was he got rolled and woke up in jail. He said he knew the ropes as he once was even married to a mexican woman. He said he had pinned some money in his shorts and the police fined him that amount and kicked him loose in the rags. Said they or whoever rolled him stole his expensive western boots etc. I had left my company truck and personal travel trailer on the American side and had extra boots and cloths. I was driving to New Orleans from California to drop the truck as I was quitting the company. I got in a little difficulty myself down there. Several locals started to try and roll me too and I sort of showed them it was a bad idea. I assumed they also called their cop friends on me so the two of us got lost in a crowd of tourists, and got back on the American side okay. By that time my new "friend" wanted to ride with me east. He was likeable of course, until he started mentioning scams we could pull!
We got to EL Paso on New Years Eve and I "left" him in a Mexican bar. That was over 54 years ago.

When I was a Lockheed guard I found a extremely dirty bum wandering on company property. It was on a Sunday morning and I pretty much could handle things by my rules as no supervision was at work. The bum asked me what state he was in. California. Damn! The last I can remember I was in Texas! I determined he had got in the plant in a boxcar that we would occasionally open a locked train gate for articles. I drove the bum to where I had heard there was a halfway house nearby and gave him $10s. I hated writing reports.

I stopped giving after I spotted 3 "homeless" types getting out of a delivery van that was apparently dropping them off at their assigned street corners, early one morning on my way to work.

IMO, scumbags have taken advantage of the truly needy, and made it a business.

I was driving from back east to California and was in Kansas or Nebraska. I passed a rough looking hitchhiker and didn't stop. I got to the next town and stopped to eat. Came out and the guy was leaning against my truck. Ya passed me up back thar! (Like I should be ashamed of myself.) Yeah, I seen ya. Then he softened a bit and nicely asked if I could drive him about another sixty miles up the road. Sure, climb in. As we drove he would stare straight ahead in intense thought with his mouth open. Definitely a nut. At the time he was about in his mid-late fiftys I guess. I would say something and he would snap out of it and answer sort of normal. Then he again would just stare ahead with a worried look with his mouth hanging open. Suddenly he turned to me and said he just escaped jail! He was wearing all denims. That didn't shake me in the least as I was young and dumb and at the time figured I could handle anyone and along with that just figured perhaps he just walked off from a trustee farm or whatever. I never took things or people too seriously back then.
By that time I had already told him I was driving to northern California to do a job. He asked me to take him with me, hire him. I lied, said no, I have a crew waiting on me but if someone doesn't show, give me your address or a phone number and I will get ahold of you. He did. You know, I really cant remember if I dropped a dime on him or not!

I must live in a bubble. I rarely see beggars out with cardboard signs. There have only been two or three times when some guy wants to sell me meat out of the back of his truck. That happened more in Northwest Suburbs of Chicago.

Are they out more at a specific time of day? I really don’t see these people with their cardboard signs. The last time I saw a guy asking for change was an extremely cold day in January. We gave him some money, figuring the weather was bad enough he had to be sincere.
