There were three large lead-filled pipes underneath the thing, designed to be released to gain buoyancy. Also several bags of shot and some weights hanging on hooks. If these weights were dumped, they would theoretically fall nearly straight down. If they were released from the sub, and the sub imploded, it may have floated or drifted miles away. I suspect we will hear that this debris field they found will turn out to be the lead ballast. Just a hunch, I wasn't there.
