Reading that they were not teachers but other staff really does not lessen the impact of this incident. It is a sad commentary on how a certain element of our society sees physical violence as the first and possibly only means of settling disagreements. A number of years ago, when I was the Administrator of a large health care facility in Milwaukee, and where most of our staff was African American, I had a particular young woman who worked for us as a Nurse's Aide. She was strikingly beautiful young girl, but who never smiled. When I jokingly mentioned to her that she should try to smile and show the world how beautiful she was (probably very inappropriate for me to say even at that time as a middle aged white boss) she actually did smile, and then said "I never smile because it makes you look weak. And in my part of Milwaukee you cannot afford to look weak or you will be attacked. So I don't smile and I try to look like the meanest, toughest woman on the street." And things have only gotten worse in the 20 years since that incident.
