Superstitions

Bad things always happen in threes, and I'll tell you why - because after three bad things happen, everyone says "see, bad things happen in threes!" And then start back counting at one...

666 is the mark of the BEAST
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666
I guess nobody has ever had wisdom or understanding cause as far as I know no one has ever figured out who he is. :? Looked up superstition. it says 1: beliefs or practices resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, or trust in magic or chance. 2:an irrationally abject attitude of mind toward nature, the unknown, or God resulting from superstition

A nearby area has a telephone exchange of 666. Nothing much happened there if you don't count the gas station fuel tank leak or contamination from an old Nike missle base. :). I've heard some buildings don't have a 13th floor but haven't seen it. I count 13 as a lucky number since my last daughter was born on the 13th.

How do you build a twenty story building without a thirteenth floor? It's impossible.

A rose by any other name....

I can change my name but I'm still the same person.

I am not stupidstitious; However, I was involved in two accidents on sucessive Easter Sundays when I was a kid. I was a passenger both times; my mother was driving one and her boyfriend the other. Nobody hurt...BUT, to this day and those to come, I have never driven my vehicle on an Easter Sunday.
So, that is the origin of my stupidstition!

Superstitions are odd... many buildings in New York City have no marked 13th floor, the 13th is marked 14 as if that really changes the fact that the floor is actually the 13th :)

I find it 'telling' that is someone who makes the mistake of referring to "Revelations" instead of 'Revelation'. then they are not a real Christian. Seems just a tad bit judgmental and high handed to me.

As for the original post (from back on 2017), I don't consider myself superstitious but I do my best when I show up at a customer's house to leave by the same door I first came in.

Back in the 80s on three consecutive March 15th I was in car accidents while riding as a passenger. Ever since then I make sure I am driving if I have to go somewhere on that date. Beware the ides of March.

Resurrecting a OLD OLD post but still fun reading. I don't throw salt over my shoulder if I spill some, I have walked under ladders with no repercussions, I have broken more mirrors then I can count and nothing unusual happened except my wallet was lighter because I had to purchase another.

I'm not particularly superstitious, but I've always been funny about changing direction when a black cat crossed my path. Now, at the end of my road, there are about 500 feral black cats that all love to hang out in the road, and we now have two black out door cats ourselves. I have had to adopt a more relaxed policy on black cats... So far so good, fingers crossed

Our local electrical workers union is IBEW Local 666… raises a few eyebrows when you tell people but they don’t have any issues with it so it’s all good far as I’m concerned.
As I’ve said before I am not really a “lucky” person but I’ve had more good experiences on Friday the 13th than bad.
I do try to avoid stepping on a crack… my mother is soon to be 92 and I’m not taking chances on that.

Especially since the book and its title are translations of translations. To me its as important as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" vice "Harry Potter and the Philosopher;s Stone".

Usually in large buildings they call the bottom floor the ground floor. The floor above it is the first floor. If you do this then skipping the number 13 on the elevator is not a big deal. The number of floors turns out the same as if it were numbered the other way.

I'm posting this simply to get from 666 to 667 before anything bad happens!

That was a close one... Hope you didn't loiter too long on, well, you know what number...

I worked on elevators for many years, and had a lot of older buildings that skipped 13, going from 12th to the 14th floor.

Superstitions are a way that ignorance deals with the unknown, seeking an explanation that if true would guide one past some real life problems. As mankind has learned more through science, superstition has somewhat diminished. More than a few philosophers put religion in the category of superstition, but each of us is free to believe whatever we want to believe in this free country. Years ago I had a friend who was a Mayo Clinic trained oncologist, but he was also of Scicilian ancestry. Whenever he bought a new car he would put a bag of garlic under the seat for at least the first few weeks of ownership. This highly educated physician just couldn't completely discard some of the superstitions that were inculcated into him during his youth by his uneducated Scicilian parents who emigrated to this country. I used to tease him about it and he would smile and just shrug, but he kept doing it. The belief was that the garlic would keep "evil spirits" away from the car and thus help keep it trouble free.

I was checking out at the grocery and pulled out a 20, the register showed the return change @ $6.66

The checkout girl took a penny out of the little dish by the register and added it to the total.....

Hi,
I've never turned anything on Friday the 13th. I felt a little left out until someone once explained it could never happen because my birthday's on the 12th.

Rick....some times things just happen. See below

It was a rainy night on a Friday the 13th when I picked up a hitchhiker. We drove for a while and she whispered in my ear

I guy at work went to buy donuts. The bill came to $6.66. On the way back he totaled his pickup. To this day he won’t pay a bill if it’s $6.66. He’ll pay $6.67.
