I sometimes wonder how some superstitions start? I was looking in the "classified" section and saw some people commenting on the number 666. I never knew it held any special anything till many years ago I was registering my new car on Aberdeen Proving Ground and when I was given my bumper sticker it was numbered 666. The lady working the counter said to me "Wait I'll destroy that and give you a new number." I asked her "Why?". She then said that it was the 'devil's' number or some such thing. I have always wondered where such "ideas" started. I told her to just give me the sticker as I don't believe it such nonsense. I carried that "666" sticker around till I sold the car. Nothing bad happened.

indeed. one of the great motorcycle roads along the AZ/NM border was 666 until it was changed to 191. I can't imagine the change was worth the cost of one street sign. But, I just threw salt over my shoulder just in case.

I took a course in interpretation of the Bible in college (required course at a Baptist College). Most of the course was on the Apocrypha ("hidden writings") that the Church voted to ignore at the Council of Nicea in 300 AD.

Most of the rest of the course was on the book of Revelation (NOT Revelations==most commonly made error by "pseudo" Christians). The Revelation of John of Patmos was a "pep" talk to the Christians under Nero and was heavily coded. In Jewish/Hebrew numerology, "666" is the coded acronym for "Nero"

Despite her claims to the contrary, my Mother was very superstitious. When notified of a death in the family, she got this sense of foreboding, as she was convinced death came in threes.

And having a picture of someone fall off the wall was a sure sign of imminent death in the family, often of the person in the photo. This superstition, by the way, dates back to Jesse James, who was shot while re-hanging a photo that had fallen.

And the week before my nephew was killed, she said she had seen a white dove.


And above all, NEVER make light of beliefs!

And that mistake, of saying "Revelations" is not limited to "pseudo" Christians, as many older saints often say that as well as the young children. I have had 117 youngsters recite the books of the Bible to me, and each has correctly said "Revelation."

Superstitions are used to explain something we can't. Which seems to be a lot lately.
Bad luck is to blame when something bad happens to us.
Good luck is to blame when something good happens to someone else.
It's a way to rationalize the world.
However, I once walked under a ladder carrying a black cat named 666.
14 robins in the next county died instantly.
To this day robins won't fly over that county.

So it's really Global Warming "faith" then? They have a bad record of climate predictions.

I've heard some buildings don't have a 13th floor but haven't seen it. I count 13 as a lucky number since my last daughter was born on the 13th.

Must have been a Nike Ajax site as the Nike Hercules was a solid fuel system.

My Mom was very superstitious. So much so that we're pretty certain she made up her own when nothing else seemed to fit the particular situation.
One that was well known in Sicilian/Italian (and other) ethnic groups was to break dishes on New Years Eve for good luck in the coming year.
My Dad only had one. He loved wild mushrooms and would scour the woods after a night time rain storm for the delicacies. He always put a silver dollar (when they were real silver) and a whole clove of garlic in with them while cooking. He said if the garlic turned brown, or the silver tarnished, the mushrooms were poison and they would be thrown out. I once asked him if he ever had the silver tarnish or the garlic turn brown. He said "No, because I know which mushrooms are safe to pick". I believe he was correct about knowing which ones to pick, but seriously doubt if the silver or garlic have any scientific basis.

As a Sheet Metal Worker I have worked on high rise buildings in the Atlanta area both new construction & doing tenant work/renovations in existing buildings. I have never seen a building put the number 13 on a floor. The always conveniently go from 12 to 14. Over course the 14th floor is really the 13th but it doesn't matter to me anyway as long as the checks cash.

I was trying to figure out if my son also turned 13 on a Friday the 13th. He did not.
He did turn 6, 17, 23, 28, and 34 on a Friday the 13th.

Wasn't Friday the 13th started when the king of France and the Pope raided the Knights Templar and declared them heretics. Lesson learned, don't lend so much money to the king of France that it is easier to kill you rather than to pay you back.

I wasn't born on the 13th but rather on May 6. . . the day the Hindenburg exploded at Lake Hurst NJ. I seriously doubt that there is any connection between the two events. :D

Old superstition that if a bird, especially a Sparrow flies into the house, someone is going to die in the family.. I've heard that one all my life as an Italian from NY..

I don't believe in it. But yeah, I've heard it.. I've also heard, "don't whistle in the house". It's supposedly bad luck.. But don't know why..

To me 666 is the number after 665 and before 667. There are many things that are more important. A couple are "never drink downstream of the herd!" and "don't eat the yellow snow!".
