Super Blackhawk as primary HD

I have a lot of firearms now n over the years, but I have continued to use my Super
Blackhawk as my primary bedside home defense gun. The confidence in the 44 mag or 44 spl round, the deliberate action required to put the SA into readiness, n the overall unchallenged reliability of the Ruger Black hawk line just keeps it as my home defense go to gun... Even though I have some of the great handguns over the years in Sigs n Glocks, Smiths n Berettas....
Anyone else feel the same about the SBH for home defense

I bought a Single-Six on my 21st b-day. A couple yrs later a 44SBH. It filled several roles including HD for yrs.. The now gone Speer 225gr HP was my bullet choice then, for that use. The muzzle blast and concussion when fired indoors and in the dark is AWSOME with mag loads. Now, guess I'd look at a 44spec load using the Hornady 200gr XTP or similar.

I really like my Super Blackhawk but it is not my first choice for home defense for a lot of reasons. The main reason is that the muzzle blast and flash from a .44 magnum round inside a house would be blinding and deafening. My own personal choice for home defense is my SIG P226 in .40 S&W caliber. That said, to each his or her own.

While there is a lot of concussion from a 44mag the 9mm, 40S&W and 357mag seem to have a more ear piercing ring to them. I say this from standing next to many shooters at an indoor range. I imagine a shot from a 44mag would get rid of any intruder to your house or outside in short order. :D

I certainly agree that letting a .44 mag loose inside would be painful and likely damage your hearing permanently.
A .44 special round would get the job done with a lot less blast.

I keep a .45ACP 1911 (or two) as bedside home defense for immediate, urgent use, but usually have my suppressed .44 "magnum" handy for a less than immediate threat and less danger to my wife and myself from the concussion of a full .44 mag round.

That reminds of the poster showing a Taurus Raging Judge, with the caption:
"for when the burglar is hiding behind the refrigerator..........at your neighbors house".

Well, trust me, a .22 LR fired inside a room from a handgun can do permanent hearing damage, too. But in the gravest extreme I will take hearing loss over death any day.

Not a Super Blackhawk, this is my bedside companion:

Or this, if in easier reach:

Then this one is sometimes at hand:

But if I'm dressed, this is usually closest to hand:

Now I'm confused. Should I start with a .22lr Sig and work my way up thru .22mags (revolver and rifle) , SR9, S&W Mod 60, Ruger .41 mag, and finally 12gage Mossy? Or should I reverse the order?

Oh, and then there's the blades. :?:

How do you "suppress" a revolver? The blast from the barrel-cylinder gap is pretty loud and the supressor does nothing for it.

One of the major technical errors movie and TV shows make is showing the bad guy shooting someone with a suppressed revolver and it almost completely quiet. That's nonsense.

Welcome to the Forum.
While I own more than a few SA's in big bore, I'd never feel out of line using any of mine,,, including a 44 SBH for HD.

The concussion would probably blow the windows out, so if you missed the intruder he'd have another escape route.
Having said that, this SR45 is in my night stand - I like the 10+1 .45ACP boolet capacity:

Our bedroom contains loaded .38 J and K frame Smiths and an A-5 Browning 12 ga loaded with high brass #2 shot.

Love my Ruger handguns, but SA revolvers and Mk I .22s, are not my idea of defensive weapons. I am considering a 3" 101.....

I carry a 44 Mag S/A when I'm in the woods and feel more than comfortable using it for personal defense. 2 of the guns in the BR are 45 Colt S/A but the ones closest to me are 9mm, 357mag, and 38 special. One near the front door is a 44 Special D/A. I've been shooting handguns for almost 50 years and feel comfortable with them. S/A's point very well, and I would like someone that broke into my home to see a big hole in the front and know what's at risk. Can't argue with that.

Corbon has a good SD round that is an .44 spcl with 165 gr HP. I would use that for home defense. Either in my Bulldog or SBH or Redhawk.

CCI also chambers the .44 cal 200 gr Speer Gold Dot in it's Blazer line of aluminum-cased ammo for the 44 special. Great bullet for HD/SD.

I'm using my Blackhawk flat top 44 mag, loaded with 44spl xtp's for HD right now. Only because I've sold off all my semi auto handguns due to a mountain bike addiction that started (again) years ago.

I was using a p226 for that duty, that I used to own. I sold it to wife's uncle, who then sold it to his brother, my father in law, who was nice enough to let me borrow it for that long. Actually I think he forgot about it, and then I had to go ahead an open my big mouth at Christmas..

Me: yep Tom I still have that p226 of yours! Just shot it the other day , man I love that pistol!
Tom: oh I was looking for that one a few weeks ago.... did you clean it?
Me: ya I cleaned it... ya I'll get it back to you...

Never thought of my SBH for HD. I'd guess either because I didn't shoot it enough to feel fully proficent or it was too much for the job. I always had my .357 Colt Trooper under the bed from the time I bought it in 1968. Switched to a Detonics Combat Master .45 in the early 80s and today it's a Glock 19 with the evil Black Talon ammo.

I started carrying my SBH talo 3.75 inch barrel everywhere last deer season(I hunt every day).It is so handy i still use it for EDC,but theres always a 12 ga. somewhere near by.

I keep a Rossi model 720 5 shot .44 Sp. hanging on a hook next to my bed. It is loaded with 180 gr. HP bullets that generate 900 FPS at 12 feet from the muzzle.

Next to my wife's bed, she has a 2-1/2" Smith 642 loaded with 125 gr. bullets that generate 900 FPS at 12 feet from the muzzle.

I installed a larger rubber grip on the 642 so that she gets a better grip on it, since she is getting a little arthritis in her hands and she needs a little bigger handle. She can shoot this one just fine.

Either of these guns will do their job just fine....if the need arises. 8)

I use my sheriff model .44sp as a home defense/edc weapon. It's all about what your comfortable with.
