Strange pellet gun experience

My son was shooting a pellet gun today. I was supervising. About ten shots into the session. He shot and it had none of the pellet guns normal sprong noise and it went bang almost as loud as a .22 opened the breech and some “smoke” came out.

I examined the gun found nothing wrong. Loaded it and it shot normal. It was normal for about ten more shots.

It’s a spring gun. Break open barrel. It was really strange.

Does it sound like we experienced diesel-ing?

It’s a break open Gamo rifle bought from Walmart about 12 years ago. It’s never had an issue before. .177 caliber.

Thanks. There is factory grease on the locking lug. I’m thinking he got some of that on the skirt of the pellet. It’s all I can think of to explain it.

Recently cleaned guns are prone to dieseling.

Yup.... oil in the bore of a high-performance pellet gun will get hot enough to ignite. Never had that problem with my old Daisy "Red Ryder".

Hi,

Sounds like (and with smoke looks like) dieseling.

It's a good idea to run a dry patch down the bore before shooting sessions begin. Dieseling in excess can damage the gun.

I had heard of it being done on purpose and that it was a bad idea. I didn’t ever expect it to happen by accident. Live and learn.
