Strange movie casting...

Recently blown away by a strange movie casting. Ray "Crash" Corrigan was in the movie Captive Wild Woman Movie. Ray was not credited and played Cheela, the gorilla. I was surprised as Ray is better known as playing in western movies and was one of the Three Mesquiteers, along with John Wayne.
Anybody else here come up with a strange movie casting?

James Arness and the big carrot monster in the original The Thing. Know it was at the start of his career in the biz but to picture Matt Dillon getting into that costume makes me smile.

I saw an interview with Michael Caine years ago. He was not shy about admitting he was a Hollywood whore (his word) He was happy to take any part that came with a paycheck.

I saw an interview with Michael Caine years ago. He was not shy about admitting he was a Hollywood whore (his word) He was happy to take any part that came with a paycheck.

James Mason was another actor who never turned down a role offered to him. I heard him say this in an interview of some guest talk show. That was long ago.

Travolta in Urban Cowboy. Never would have picked him for the part, but he was awesome. Great Movie. Loved Scott Glenn as Wes Hightower.

When they tried to turn Stephen King's Gunslinger novels into a movie, and cast Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg/The Man In Black, well . . . Let's just say that would have been a far better movie if the casting of the male leads had been reversed.

McConaughey looks like he was born to play Roland, and the slimmed down, stringy version of him at the time of the film looked like he'd been wandering in the desert for years as Roland had in the books. And Elba can chew the scenery with the best of them; he would have been a hoot as Randall Flagg.

But, no, politically correct casting reared its ugly head . . .

I've enjoyed both actors in other roles. But The Gunslinger made no sense, in casting or plot (but gripes about the plot is likely best left for another thread).

I can well imagine Connery's reaction that first day on set: "Where's the rest of the costume?"

As to taking roles just for the paycheck, I recall an interview with Robert Mitchum, who when asked how he decided on which movie roles to accept, he said he just looked at how much it would pay and picked the highest ones. Can't blame him at all.

Robert Mitchum must have had great acting chops as he was paid for being in 100+ movies. I think in most roles that he played, he played them like, non-chalantly, he didn't give a damn!

It WAS a rather large monster.

John Qualen was hired to teach John Wayne the accent. It was a decent but hokey movie.

Wiki has Rico doing american war movies from 1942, signed with mgm in '47 (did stage during the 30s in new york) got second-billing to clark gable and starred opposite esther williams, so i think the 5-0 was a lark. He was the one who killed the frito bandito ads, for instance; typecasting, discriminatiin, et.c.
